News Briefs Itty Bitty T-ball Sign-ups are still being taken for Itty Bitty T-ball for boys and girls ages 3 to 5, sponsored by Temescal Canyon baseball. Clothes Drive Second Chance Textile will hold a Clothes Drive on Sunday, March 7 at the Farmer’s Market. The drive will benefit Canyon Lake Middle School and Quail Valley Elementary. Caregiver support group Speaker Jo Bushnell will speak about the “Vial of Life” program at the next Caregivers Connection support group on Monday, March 8, from 10 a.m. to noon. Local firemen and paramedics look for the “Vial of Life” sign in a window near the front door, which along with a magnet on the refrigerator door indicates residents have their emergency information needed for immediate care stored in a vial inside their refrigerator. The Caregivers Connection support group is for caregivers and their patients and meets at Canyon Lake Community Church on the second and fourth Mondays of each month from 10 a.m. to noon in rooms C5 and C6. Titan rummage sale The Temescal Canyon High School Girls Softball team is holding a rummage sale on Sunday, March 14, from 9 to 2 p.m., at Storm Stadium's Marketplace. The team is raising funds to offset the cost of getting new uniforms for the program. Residents are invited to come to the sale and help them achieve their goal. Spring Swing The Lake Elsinore Storm has announced that the annual Sip N’ Swing celebration, newly named Spring Swing, will be held on Saturday, March 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. at The Diamond. Admission is free for guests of all ages. Festivities will include free Kids Fun Zone area, featuring bounce houses, jolly jumps and inflatables for the young ones. Baseball fans of all ages can take a behind-the-scenes tour of the ballpark and batting practice under the lights, facilitated by Frozen Ropes Baseball and Softball Training Center. Fans can get their picture taken with Storm mascot, Thunder, and also win prizes, giveaways and a chance to get lucky at The Diamond. Guests will also have the opportunity to purchase the best seats for the best nights, including the upcoming Exhibition Game against the San Diego Padres on April 2 at 6:30 pm. Casino bus trip The Canyon Lake Woman’s Club has planned a bus trip to Pechanga Casino on Monday, March 22, as a club fundraiser. The donation is $15. The casino will give each passenger a $10 voucher upon arrival for use in the casino. The bus will leave the Lodge parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and return from Pechanga at approximately 2:30 p.m. Those with current Pechanga Casino cards should have their number available when making reservations. Boat Safety classes The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will present a boating safety class in Lake Elsinore on Sunday, March 21, at 8 a.m. The intense one-day class is a full eight hours encompassing all the basics of safe boating and meets court requirements for boaters with moving violations on the water. The cost is $75. The classes are taught by Peter Dawson, Coxswain, USCGAUX, who is 100-ton certified and has 58 years of boating experience. For reservations call 202-1584. Vendors/volunteers wanted The Jr. Women’s Club is preparing for its annual Easter Carnival on Saturday, April 3, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event includes such activities as carnival style games, crafts, temporary tattoos, a bounce house, Easter Bunny photos and vendor booths. Booths are available to those interested in selling crafts and boutique items for $25 per booth; vendors are asked to donate an item to be used for a drawing. Clothing wanted A couple in Canyon Lake regularly makes deliveries of food and clothing to the Riverside City Mission, where the needs of the hungry and homeless are growing dramatically. Alcoholics Anonymous Temecula Valley Alcoholics Anonymous holds meetings in most nearby cities. The primary purpose is to help members achieve sobriety. Pet Preparedness The Canyon Lake Emergency Preparedness Committee is in need of donations of pet supplies to keep in storage in the event of a disaster affecting the community. If the need arises to open a Red Cross shelter, there will be a need to house Canyon Lake pets, too, according to CLEP Director Nancy Carroll. There is a need for wire enclosures, leashes, collars, food and water dishes and toys, as well as clean blankets and small bathroom type rugs for bedding. Debby says she will offer the service as long as she is able to do so. Hospital volunteers needed Menifee Valley Medical Center is seeking volunteers. Only four hours of volunteer service per week qualifies one as an active member of the hospital volunteer team. No experience is necessary; training will be provided. Child advocates needed The local organization of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children is seeking volunteers for its program. As trained advocates, CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court. No special education or background is needed – just a desire to help abused and neglected children. Volunteers must pass a background check, followed by a 30-hour training course. The sender selects a design and message, which is then personalized with the sender’s name and town. Xerox then prints and sends a postcard to a member of the military stationed overseas. It only takes a few minutes to send a postcard and say thanks. Donate a mammogram The Breast Cancer website invites people to click on its site daily so it can meet its quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to the site, www.thebreastcancersite.com and click on “donating a mammogram” for free (pink window in the middle). This doesn’t cost one thing. Corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. |
