Not just another pretty place

It’s not just another pretty place. Canyon Lake is known for its beauty and amenities. But it also is known as one of the safest places to live in Southern California and this week’s annual police report, provided by Captain James McElvain of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Perris Station, has the statistics to prove it. Not all is flowers and sunshine, however. Crime was up significantly in March over the previous month and CLPD warns residents to take appropriate precautions.

This Week's Official CLPOA News

Crime up (and down) in Canyon Lake
There is good news and bad news when it comes to crime in Canyon Lake. When the worst incidents reported after Easter weekend are stolen Easter baskets and vandalized cars, some cities would consider that a pretty good weekend. Most of the crimes Canyon Lakers experience are annoying and expensive rather than life-threatening.

Easter finds one man a hero, others hopping mad
While most Canyon Lake families were able to enjoy their Easter morning and children delighted in surprises left by the Easter Bunny, for others it was a morning of unplanned activities and unpleasant surprises. Two families had their cars vandalized, while another family had their Easter baskets stolen.

Click it or ticket
The Canyon Lake Police Department will be aggressively enforcing the state's occupant protection laws as part of California's 2009- 2010 "Click It or Ticket" mobilization, taking place November 2009 through November 2010.

Candidates discuss General Manager position
The candidates for the POA Board of Directors have been given three questions and the opportunity to answer the questions in 400 words or less. In the April 2 issue, candidates discussed what they believe to be the two or three most pressing issues facing Canyon Lake. This week they discuss what qualifications they would look for in a General Manager and what they would like to see happen with the Lodge restaurant.

Meet the candidates
Another opportunity to hear the candidates speak has been added to the calendar.

City Connection: Mayor reminds residents of summit, census
At Tuesday’s POA Board meeting, and again Wednesday at the City Council meeting, Mayor Nancy Horton asked residents to mark their calendars for the second annual Water Summit on Saturday, May 1 in the Towne Center.

Application deadlines near for scholarships

Easter Carnival 2010
Saturday, April 3, proved to be a perfect day for the Easter Carnival and Egg Hunt, hosted by the Jr. Women's Club and Men's Golf Club. With sunny skies and clear blue lake as a backdrop, children had fun gathering Easter eggs, jumping on a giant Velcro wall, playing games and hopping in a sack race, pictured here.

Arts and Entertainment

Arts and Entertainment: Take a 'Sentimental Journey'
The Canyon Lake Community Theatre members invite their friends and neighbors to buy a ticket for a “Sentimental Journey” and be swept back to the big band era to a time when swing music was king and romance was its queen.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Clash of the Titans'
“Clash of the Titans” is a violent, bloodless, ceaseless parade of GCI mutants and monsters that have little discernible purpose other than to detract from the absurd and lackluster storyline. However, with big name stars, this remake of the 1981 cult classic offers spectacular special effects to help it rise to entirely new levels of mediocrity.

Betsy's Best Bets: Tips on coaxing the inner brat to spring clean
Lately, every magazine cover in the checkout line seems to be shouting the same message to me: it’s time to spring clean! They kindly offer detailed cleaning lists designed to take me from room to room, with suggestions to dry clean my dingy drapes, oil my neglected cabinets and flip my lumpy mattress. I get tired just reading about it, but vow to get to work immediately . . . right after my nap.

Day Tripping With Mary: Enjoy a 'Real Time' with Bill Maher on Fridays
My husband, Clark looks forward to every Friday night February through April and again from September through November. No, it’s not just TGIF or date night or poker night – it’s “Real Time with Bill Maher!”

Letter: Successful JWC tourney
I would like to thank everyone involved in our first annual Jr. Women’s Club Charity Golf Tournament. Our event was a great success thanks to all involved from the golfers, sponsors and those who donated items as well as their time.

Letter: JWC tournament sponsors
I would like to recognize all the sponsors and contributors who helped make our first annual Golf Tournament such a success.

Letter: By all means, vote
We have lived in Canyon Lake for over 25 years.  Never in all that time have we talked to so many people who are upset with our present POA Board’s actions.  A very expensive audit was taken and the results are a secret to us, the people who paid for it!

Letter: Landscape plans
My thanks to the ACC. I had planned on doing some landscaping and concrete work around my home. I believe the changes I planned would have made my front and rear yards more attractive.

Letter: Unexpected gift
Being married to a Marine you learn to expect the unexpected; but no one could have expected the wonderful experience that occurred this Easter weekend when my 3-year-old daughter and I found ourselves far away from family and my husband overseas.

Letter: Quagga mussels
In regards to the quagga mussels in the Lake, there are a few questions I would like to ask:

Near and Far: Egypt cruise on the Nile
Jack and Diane Stroud and Dave and Karen Martin visited Egypt and the Nile River Valley during a trip from January 14 to 28.

Changes made to instructions on ballot

The POA sent boat registration notices in the mail this week. Did you know that in order to register a boat in Canyon Lake the current registration needs to be in the name of the prime member, co-owner or lessee with boat privileges?

Grill and Griddle: Events are planned at Lodge in months ahead
Did you know the Lodge is one of the busiest amenities we have in Canyon Lake? For example, in the month of April we have 18 different groups hosting some type of event at the Lodge.
