July 17 marks one-year anniversary of fire
It was on a Friday morning one year ago that merchants, workers, city officials, customers and residents stood stunned on the outskirts of the Towne Center as flames raged though an entire office building. Like this writer, they were mesmerized and heartbroken at the sight of fire leaping from the roof and smoke billowing from shattered doors and windows as firefighters struggled to subdue what photographer Bert Barbay labeled "The Beast."
Scholarship Pageant returns
The Miss Canyon Lake Scholarship Pageant is back and will be held September 18. A meeting for those interested in participating will be held July 26 at 6 p.m. in the Pool View Room at the Lodge. A photo will be taken at that time to use in the program and in The Friday Flyer.
City Connection: Council adopts budget, supports Arizona law
At the Wednesday, July 14 City Council meeting, Council members passed a resolution to join several other Southwest Riverside County cities to express support for Arizona’s adoption of Senate Bill 1070, “Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhood Act.”
City Connection: Time to run for City Council
Assistant City Clerk Sarah Manwaring announced the nomination period for two seats on the Canyon Lake City Council opened July 12 and will close August 6.
City Connection: Clean-up day in August
CR&R and the City of Canyon Lake will provide an opportunity to conveniently dispose of bulky items like e-waste, old furniture and appliances and more on Saturday, August 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Canyon Lake Community Church, 30515 Railroad Canyon Rd.
City Connection: Kids to make splash with real water at Library
Kids participating in the Library’s summer reading program, “Make a Splash,” will get wet next Friday when the Library hosts a Water Activity Day with Tyler Klass.
Another collision results from red light-runner
There was another traffic collision this week at the intersection of Railroad Canyon Rd. and Canyon Lake Dr. South when a westbound motorist once again ran a red light.
CLEPC welcomes new county fire representative
Many people don’t think about their own emergency preparedness until there is an earthquake, like the 5.4 shaker on July 7, or a fire, flood or other disaster. However, there is group that works behind the scenes throughout the year preparing for various emergency scenarios that could affect the community.
Resident in top 10 of You Tube Idol Search
Beginning tomorrow Canyon Lakers will have an opportunity to help fellow resident, Joanna Pearl, by voting for her in an online Idol Search singing competition sponsored by You Tube. The competition began with 37 contestants and has been narrowed down to the top 10. Joanna is currently in round six of the competition.
Visit Farmers Market
The Farmers Market is still open in the Towne Center, despite a permit renewal “glitch” that kept it from opening on the 4th of July. This month marks the second anniversary of the market, which has struggled over the past year with lack of attendance by shoppers.

Spotlight on Seniors: Francesca Zuccola
Francesca Zuccola took her four years at Temescal Canyon High School seriously enough to be named valedictorian and achieve the rank of second in her class with a 4.21 GPA. She also applied for and received numerous scholarships.

Cole Murray, a 2010 graduate of Temescal Canyon High School, was in the Top 25 of his class all four years of high school and graduated as a valedictorian.
Canyon Laker named a 'Guardian of Freedom'
Cory and Roxanne Sender are pleased to announce that Roxanne’s son, U.S. Air Force Technical Sergeant Michael R. Chacon, recently received a Certificate of Congressional Honor from the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as a “Guardian of Freedom” award on July 4 at the Riverside County Philharmonic Foundation Patriots Concert at White Park.

The Cup Above, a combination ceramics studio and coffee house that recently opened in the Towne Center, invites residents to its first evening of entertainment featuring the local talent of singer-songwriter Lincélie on Saturday, July 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. Owner Judy Randle says this will be the first of several local artists who have been invited to perform at The Cup Above.

Day Tripping With Mary: A breath of fresh air is yours for the taking
Last weekend I found myself standing on top of “Suicide Rock,” 7,528 feet above sea level. Breathing in the mountain fresh air and listening to the wind blow through the huge Jeffrey Pine and cedar trees, it felt great to be alive. I had a picturesque view of the mountain town of Idyllwild below me, as well as a 360-degree view of alpine mountains, foothills and desert landscapes.

Canyon Lake’s Sandy Lillie can be spotted cruising around town in her very own “trophy on wheels:” a silver Chevy Equinox courtesy of Mary Kay Cosmetics. Her personalized plate, TGRLLEZ, is a play on her name and also the name of Sandy’s team, “Tiger Lillies,” within Mary Kay.

It has been a few months since I last shared with you my list of favorite things, and now that summer is in full swing and our days are heating up, I am excited to tell you about my favorite stuff for summer. Some of it is new, some of it is not, but all made my list because they help me get through the summer in one way or another (even if it’s just something nifty that makes me smile).
Letter: Control dangerous dogs
Regarding the poor lady attacked by the pit bull. Most pit bulls are not aggressive. They are living creatures; it’s not their fault they were born pit bulls. However, how many times have we heard, “It never showed any sign of being aggressive until it attacked my baby, child or cat, etc.?”
Letter: More on dog attack
This is in response to the dog encounter by a small 72-year-old lady who I know and adore. How should we deal with this problem? Let’s reach out to the owners of the dog and get their opinion of the encounter.
Letter: Golfers damaging property
We have lived on the Golf Course between the 3rd and 4th hole for the past 11 years. Recently, two of our windows were broken by two different golfers within just a couple of days of each other. On both occasions, my husband was able to talk to those responsible for breaking the windows.

Vick and Carolyn Knight are bragging about their grandchildren again – what else is new? Granddaughter Molly Knight, daughter of popular musician Steve Knight (who often plays at the Country Club here and for the Lake Elsinore Elks) has a feature article in the August issue of Glamour Magazine.

Brian and Courtney Byers of Canyon Lake are happy to announce the birth of their daughter, Cassidy Jean Byers, born at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Riverside on July 2, 2010, weighing 7 lbs. 1 oz. and measuring 20 inches long.

Four Riverside County schools, including Elsinore High School, have been recognized by the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Center for their exceptional college enrollment rates among AVID students. AVID is the national organization behind the middle and high school college readiness program.

Alice Alma Tracey was born in Highland, Illinois on May 28, 1913 and passed away at home in Canyon Lake on July 8, 2010.

Club News: Lions and Lioness install new officers at joint meeting
Canyon Lake Lions and Lioness installed their new officers for 2010/2011 at a joint meeting at the Lodge on June 2. Past District Governor Mel Niez performed the installation.
Club News: Triathlon Club invites residents to get fit, have fun
The Canyon Lake Triathlon Club became an officially sanctioned club when the POA Board gave its approval on July 6. The club is open to anyone with an interest in swimming, cycling and/or running. No one has to do all three events to be in the club. Individual and family memberships are available.
Club News: Poker Run yields full house
Street Carts of Canyon Lake held a Poker Run for street carts, golf carts and boats last Saturday at Holiday Harbor, with everyone in the community invited, whether or not they had a boat or golf cart.

Adopt-a-pet: Merlin and Patches
This week’s pets are Merlin and Patches. Merlin is a handsome and smart blue/gray 9-year-old Weimaraner in need of a good home to live out his senior years. He’s already neutered and ready to go. Patches is a sweet 9-year-old domestic shorthaired calico. She’s already spayed and ready to go home today. Many kittens are also available for adoption.

President Newsom discusses road construction
I hope everyone had a productive, healthy and safe week. The subject of this brief message is the road construction that has started in Canyon Lake.
Operations Overview: Road Project update
The current phase of the Road Improvement Project involves the removal and replacement of the asphalt and sub grade on all of Vacation Dr. and Canyon Lake Dr. South from Vacation Dr. to Blue Bird Dr. The section of Canyon Lake Dr. South from Blue Bird Dr. to Railroad Canyon Rd. will receive a grind and cap.
TWG finishes final project
Tuesday Work Group (TWG) volunteers are taking time off now as they always do during the hot summer months. However, during their final workdays in June, they got a lot of work done near Hole 7.
Country Club: Tried the new menu at the Country Club?
Tonight’s dinner will feature all items on the new menu the Country Club recently introduced, as well as specials of House Salad with warm dinner rolls, Grilled Salmon with Lemon Aioli Hollandaise Sauce and sides of rice pilaf and seasonal vegetables for $12.95, and 12 oz. New York Strip Steak with Port Wine Demi Glace served with baked potato and seasonal vegetables for $14.95.

The Country Club is open Monday through Saturday, 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dinner is served on Fridays, beginning at 5 p.m. On Sunday, the breakfast menu is available from 6:30 to 9 a.m., with the buffet brunch served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For reservations, call 246-1773.
At the Lodge: Taco Del Mar touts Taco Tuesday menu
Taco Tuesday at the Lodge will continue each week from 5 to 8:30 p.m. until August 31, with Taco Del Mar providing an expanded menu that includes tacos, enchilada platter, taco salad, super meat nachos, Baja bowl, Mondito burrito, bean and cheese burrito, wet burrito, kid’s quesadilla, rice and beans, chips and salsa and chips and queso.

The annual Canyon Lake Jr. Golf Clinic is scheduled for the week of August 2 through 6. The format will be the same as years past, with kids going through four swing stations during the hour-long clinic, learning the basic fundamentals of hitting the golf ball.
