News Briefs: Garage sale to benefit kids' basketball ministry

Shane Hanson, a 2006 graduate of Temescal Canyon High School, enjoys coaching young people and has found a way to have a positive impact on them through a sports ministry. Shane was a member of the 2009 Crossover International basketball team that traveled to Romania, Hungary and the Czech Republic to put on basketball clinics for kids. He is going back this summer to do camps in Serbia and Romania July 23 to August 14.
This year, he will lead a group of 15 to 20 people as the tour director and is raising $2,000 for the trip through a garage sale and also sales of small portable fire extinguishers for $10, which normally sell for $20. He will hold the fundraising garage sale on Saturday, July 10, at 22807 Canyon Lake Dr. South, beginning at 8 a.m.
Last year, more than 130 kids attended the camps, which according to Shane, was the biggest turnout in the history of Crossover. Shane was responsible for 10 boys and girls at each camp and taught them how to play basketball, coached them during games and shared the gospel with them.
During last year’s trip, Shane also played against the countries’ professional teams each evening after the camp ended in the afternoon. Reflecting on last year’s trip, Shane says, “It was the single greatest experience in my life working with the kids overseas.”
Anyone who would like to purchase a fire extinguisher, make a monetary donation or donate an item for the garage sale may contact Shane at 660-1551. For more information on Shane’s ministry trip, visit progressionathletics.com.
