City Connection: School bus safety
It’s important for the children’s safety that all motorists are mindful of the bus stop locations and drive carefully when approaching them. Motorists should look ahead and slow down when they see children, just in case a child decides to dart into traffic unexpectedly. It is much easier to avoid an accident when traveling at a safe speed.

Community Cuisine: What light in yonder Lighthouse breaks?
If you look closely, you may see a faint glimmer of light emanating from the Lighthouse. Not a beacon, of course; not much more than a glow, but it could be the start of something big (culinarily speaking). It may be coming to pass that Canyon Lake’s dark, musty, dusty, moribund central amenity may be experiencing a new birth. It won’t be a quick delivery; there will be labor pains.

Movie Review: 'The Expendables'
With the simultaneous release of “The Expendables” and “Eat, Pray, Love,” the real battle is Maxim vs. Cosmo. Sylvester Stallone’s reunion for elderly tough guys allowed him to successfully sign an all-star cast including every heroic thug in Hollywood. What, no Mr. T? But, with an aging cast, a better choice might have been a sequel to “Cocoon.”

Betsy's Best Bets: Become a poll worker for all the right reasons
“And how is your baby doing?” he asked last week when we talked over the phone. “Martin,” I replied, “my baby is going into 3rd grade. That’s just proof of how long we’ve known each other!” I look forward to that phone conversation once or twice a year with a man named Martin Hubler of the Riverside County Registrar of Voters.

Letter: Golf Pro contract
If you are unhappy with Canyon Lake being run like the "government," please take a look at the City of Bell. Citizens were unaware of their representatives' actions and their city council – doing as they pleased with exorbitant salaries. Why? Because nobody wanted to pay attention until it was too late.

Letter: In praise of road workers
We are regular early morning walkers throughout Canyon Lake. Since July 6, at 6 a.m., as the traffic cones say, we have had the opportunity to follow the progress of the construction work being done by Cooley Construction.

Letter: Fishing line tragedy
I live on Appaloosa near Longhorn about 100 yards from the water. I found out through my neighbor there was a crow trapped in my eucalyptus tree. The bird was about 40 feet above the ground and its legs were tangled in fishing line.

Letter: POA contracts
Contrary to the apparent insider knowledge on the motivation behind going to bid on the Golf Pro Contract written by Orlando Ortiz, I find his comments very interesting. It is evident that Mr. Ortiz’s knowledge and concentration is on what is happening in the golf community. As such, he has missed what is going on overall.

More than 200 guests celebrated my 90th birthday on August 14. My sister, Lucille Skillestad, offered her home in Canyon Lake for the event. Food was ample and could have served another 50.
