City Connection: Crew to survey Railroad Canyon Rd. for widening projectBy Lori Moss City Manager Last November, the City Council approved a project to expand Railroad Canyon Rd. to six lanes with bike lanes, curb, gutter and sidewalks, pending acquisition of funding. In January, the Western Riverside Council of Governments (WRCOG) voted to award the City of Canyon Lake an additional $6.1 million to the project. Therefore, no monies from the City's general fund will be used for the widening. With minimal exceptions, the proposed Railroad Canyon Rd. improvements will be completed within the existing road right-of-way. This roadway project includes the improvement of approximately 1.5 miles of Railroad Canyon Rd. between the western boundary of the City, near Canyon Hills Rd. (located within the City of Lake Elsinore), and Goetz Rd. to the east (located within the City of Menifee). For the next few weeks, a survey crew will be on Railroad Canyon Rd. to measure topography and existing elevations of the road; and to locate and identify objects and structures. The crew is also plotting the ultimate widening of Railroad Canyon Rd. This survey is one of the last steps needed to complete the final design of the widening project prior to going out to bid. The City is still in the process of collecting a few pieces of right-of-way for the project. Additionally, staff has met with Southern California Edison regarding the electric poles in front of the Canyon Lake Towne Center to put electric utilities underground. This will be part of the ultimate widening. The crew plans a single lane closure for one day within the next few weeks in order to complete the survey. The closure will not conflict with school start and end times.
