This Week's Official CLPOA News
Meet the 2010 City Council candidates
One thing seems evident about the candidates for Canyon Lake City Council - they aren't running for office for personal monetary gain. As Mayor Nancy Horton pointed out at last week's 20th anniversary picnic in the Towne Center, Council members will be paid $300 per month - the same pay Council members received 20 years ago.
Transparency on the minds of local taxpayers
In light of the City of Bell's recent financial debacle, citizens are increasingly demanding fiscal transparency from public officials. In the City of Canyon Lake, residents want their officials paid well enough to deliver expected services, but also want assurance they won''t be victims of excessive spending and exorbitant salaries.
20th anniversary picnic draws hot crowd, cool cars
The weather was hotter than usual but, if hot dog sales are a measure of the crowd that showed up for the City’s 20th anniversary picnic last Sunday, it was a pretty good day. Held in the Towne Center in conjunction with the second anniversary of the Farmers Market on August 22, City staff sold 495 hotdogs for 20 cents each in honor of the 20 years Canyon Lake has been an incorporated city.
Chamber Notes

Try inventor's noodle 'Coozle'
Like many inventors, Brian Belden saw a need and created a solution to improve the lives of others. While floating in Canyon Lake on a foam noodle last year on Memorial Day, Brian observed his friends shifting their beverages from hand to hand while trying to keep them out of the water. Looking at the noodle, which has a hole at each end, Brian came up with the idea to create a cup holder that would screw into the hole.

Time to update Directory listings
The Golding Publications staff is preparing for the 2011 edition of Canyon Lake’s Residential Directory. With new escrows closed every month and, lately, foreclosures, it is a challenging task to keep the phone book current each year. Residents are reminded that being listed is not mandatory nor automatic.
Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'The Switch'
The summer blockbuster season is not the best time to feature one of the most offbeat and seriously uncomfortable comedies ever conceived. Admit it, a substitute sperm donation is not the plot most audiences are requesting. School is back in session, but audiences still prefer the schlock of "Vampires Suck" and Stallone's "The Expendables."
Day Tripping With Mary: Reaching for the sky at 11,500 feet!
Most of my readers know I love to hike. I have a special connection with being in the mountains as I used to live in the mountains at 7,000-feet elevation before moving to California.
Letter: Opening the Lodge
Opening the Lodge as a sports bar is another guaranteed failure. Who wants to stand in a crowded space for three hours to watch a football game? This is just what certain people in this community want to happen so they can justify building a new Country Club.
Letter: Thanks from the Windeler family
On behalf of the Windeler family, I would like to thank everyone for their kind words and prayers during this difficult time. It is overwhelming to know how much my father will be missed by everyone. He touched the lives of so many.

Letter: Thank you for asking
I have been asked by several people why I unexpectedly resigned as the President of the CLPOA in February. Thank you for asking. This was due to a radical rise in my blood pressure.
Letter: Stolen banners
It is with much sadness and disappointment that I have to write this letter. Someone has taken two of our Canyon Lake Community Theatre banners from the North and East Gates. We purchased three banners only two months ago for a considerable amount of money.
Letter: Daughter found
We would like to express our sincere gratitude for the love and support the community of Canyon Lake (and beyond) extended to our family while our daughter, Nikki, was missing. It was unbelievable how many people and local businesses “stepped up” to search, place flyers, bring food and water, man phones and computers and donate their own resources to find someone they didn’t even know personally.
Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: B&B in Big Bear
Marti and Lee Norris celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary on July 24 and 25 by staying in a log cabin bed and breakfast, the Inn at Fawnskin, in Big Bear. Situated directly across the road from the lake, the inn boasts green lawns and tall pines.

Dave and the Chipmunks must discover what they really value amid the superficial glamour.
Planning & Compliance: Here are some dock application guidelines
With the water level of the Lake diminishing rapidly, this is the prime time of year to install and maintain docks. The water level is low and the work should come easier. This may also be a great time to let you know that anytime you are making repairs or installing new docks, the Planning and Compliance Department requires an application and plans indicating the scope of work to be performed.
