Sunset cruise

In a variation on the gondoliers of Venice, who have plied that Italian city's canals for more than a thousand years, Canyon Lake has its own stand-up paddlers to provide peaceful silhouettes on the community's waterways. This scene was captured by Bert Barbay.

This Week's Official CLPOA News

Birth pangs of cityhood took place 20 years ago
On Sunday, August 22, the City of Canyon Lake will have a picnic to celebrate the 20th anniversary of incorporation as a city – one of several celebrations the City has planned this year. It will take place at the Farmers Market in the Towne Center with the sale of 20-cent hotdogs (for 20 years of cityhood, of course). The date Canyon Lake actually became a City was December 1, 1990; however, the birth pangs of cityhood came long before that.

Don George donates POA/MIA flag to City of Canyon Lake
The City of Canyon Lake is in possession of an official U.S. POW/MIA flag, thanks to a recent donation by former WWII prisoner of war Don George.

Former POW Don George shares his memories of WWII
The following article is reprinted from the August 8, 2005 issue of The Friday Flyer. Don, 87, recently purchased a POA/MIA flag to donate to the City of Canyon Lake. He is still married to Sadako and still meets with a group of POWs at the Veterans Hospital in Hemet on the first Thursday of every month to “chew the fat,” as he calls it.

Saturday will be a good day to clean out the garage
CR&R and the City of Canyon Lake will provide an opportunity to conveniently dispose of bulky items like e-waste, old furniture and appliances and more tomorrow, August 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Canyon Lake Community Church, 30515 Railroad Canyon Rd.

Race for City Council off to sizzling start

Movie Reviews: 'Dinner for Schmucks' and 'Joan Rivers'
This week’s double feature includes contemporary comedian Steve Carell and the barely living legend Joan Rivers. Their styles differ greatly, but neither will disappoint their fans.

Betsy's Best Bets: Examine your home through eyes of a Realtor
I love walking through model homes. I get decorating ideas and inspiration to paint or rearrange furniture and always leave with a home improvement project in mind. When I lived in a newer tract home a few years ago, I would often visit the fully-furnished and decorated model up the street and just wander through a version of my house that was free of toys and grubby fingerprints on the wall.

Cook's Corner: Consider yourself victorious with this basil pesto recipe
Each summer for several years now I’ve promised myself I would plant a vegetable and herb garden. This year I finally did it. And, glory hallelujah, the plants are still alive; it is a small victory for me. I wonder sometimes if World War II “victory gardens” were so named because the gardener was ecstatic that the plants survived.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Grandmother makes time for those doing time
Visiting prison may not be anyone’s idea of vacation. In fact, posing with The Friday Flyer in front of the Arizona State penitentiary is probably the most unusual background ever seen in the “Near and Far with The Friday Flyer” series, mostly because who wants to visit prison?

In spite of a posted 15 mph speed limit on Vacation Drive and Canyon Lake Drive South, harried residents may be tempted to revert back to the regular 35 mph limit.

Without the kindness and generosity of the people in our community, I may not have seen my old Doxie again.
