Getting air

Huge jumps are the point of "wake kiting," a sport not often seen on the Main Lake. Dave Guthery was on hand to capture this scene, if not the name of the skier involved. Most likely, this is a member of the "West Side Fliers," the water sports development team of Tony Klarich, Ron Stack and Mike Murphy.

City Connection: Pet owners show they care with micro-chipping
Earthquakes, floods, wildfires, hazardous material spills – disasters can strike anytime, anywhere. Pet owners who think they will never have to evacuate, may be tragically mistaken. That's why emergency preparedness is important for pet owners, too. Red Cross shelters do not allow pets, but the Emergency Preparedness Committee has volunteers working on plans to house household pets in the event of evacuation.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'The Town'
If an intelligent crime drama depends on Ben Affleck to be an acceptable writer, credible actor and incredible director, that’s three very good reasons to fail. The way gentle Ben’s career has been going, strike three was inevitable. But astonishingly, Affleck delivers an urban thriller on par with the highly acclaimed, “Mystic River” and “The Departed.”

Cook's Corner: Extend your summer with this chicken salad
Summer vacation means different things to different people, as I was reminded recently. In an e-mail, I let a friend of mine know I would be on vacation for a couple of weeks. She replied (a bit sarcastically, I might add) with the question, “What’s a vacation?”

Letter: Editor's Note
In the interest of giving City Council candidates a chance to respond to Letters to the Editor containing perceived misinformation about their candidacy, letters about specific candidates will not be accepted after the October 15 issue of The Friday Flyer.

In reference to Ron Martel’s August 27 article regarding various City Manager’s salaries in California: Martel states, “In Canyon Lake, salaries for its City Manager and City Council are the lowest in all Southwest Riverside County and among the lowest in all Southern California.”

Letter: Golf pro contract
Thank you, Paul Chenette, for remembering you were elected to represent the community. Paul acknowledged the hundreds of phone calls and e-mails received in support of Dave Lindeman. How sad that Dave felt compelled to resign before the meeting, having seen the handwriting on the wall.

Letter: Political 'old guard'
Please do not vote for anyone who is part of the old guard who have indirectly fleeced homeowners in Canyon Lake for years. Please do not vote for anyone who has to recuse themselves due to their personal business interests every time something important needs to be voted on.

Letter: Bar and Grill opening
A huge thank you to everyone responsible for opening the Lighthouse Bar and Grill. We visited the Lodge to support the opening and were quite pleased with the prices, food service and atmosphere. Our compliments to Rockelle Rogers and her staff for working so hard and giving us a wonderful opening week.

Letter: Randy gets my vote
I support Randy Bonner for City Council. In my opinion Mr. Zaitz has nothing new to offer our community. He has been defeated locally twice before in the last two years.

Letter: Royal Court kudos
Coco Morrison and Pam Stuckert held a very successful Scholarship Pageant on Saturday, with 23 very deserving contestants. The Chamber congratulates Coco, Pam and all of the winners. It will be a great year for the Royal Court.

Letter: Re: Kamashian letter
There’s no legal action by John Zaitz filed against the City! Let Joe Kamashian provide the case number; all suits have one. He won’t because he can’t. Half-truths and innuendo just like the last election, when Kamashian and his fellow minions claimed the City’s finances were fine, having Horton and Talbot join Craton on the Council would bring transparency and ethics.

Resident Steve Martin, who worked as a firefighter for a private fire and rescue service before being employed as a set medic for Hollywood productions, is used to fighting fires. So when he had the opportunity to meet the 'devil' on his own turf (in Hollywood) he pursued it.
