Smoke but no fire
     People in the Towne Center were startled a week ago Wednesday when fire trucks roared into the center and parked in front of another commercial building, this time the building immediately behind Pepe's Restaurant where one of last year's fire victims, the Law Offices of Beck and Greer, is now housed, along with Coldwell Banker and Horizon Pet Supply, among others.
     Someone at the pet supply store did smell smoke before calling 911, but it turns out it was nothing more than a melted ballast in a fluorescent light fixture, according to building owner Skip Newton.

Lioness Bingo
     The Canyon Lake Lioness Club holds Bingo every first and third Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room. Games are $20 for a 12-sheet set and $10 for a six-sheet set. Two 50/50 games are played for $1 each or six for $5. Refreshments are provided for a nominal donation. All proceeds from the games are donated to various charities endorsed by Lions Club International as well as helping organizations in the community.

TIP training dates
     Trauma Intervention Programs Inc. (TIP), a 501C(3) non-profit organization, is looking for men, women and teens to be part of a unique team of citizen volunteers trained to provide immediate emotional first aid and practical support to victims of traumatic events. No experience is necessary. TIP volunteers are called to emergency scenes by law enforcement, fire and hospital ER personnel in Canyon Lake, Hemet, Lake Elsinore, Menifee, Murrieta, Perris, San Jacinto, Sun City, Temecula, Wildomar and surrounding areas.
     An orientation and training class is scheduled for Thursday, October 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Murrieta. The course consists of four additional weeknights from 6 to 9 p.m., two Saturdays and a half-day on a Sunday.

Artists wanted
     The Canyon Lake Art Association invites artists to participate in its 6th annual Open Studios Tour to be held on Saturday, October 9, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, October 10, from noon to 4 p.m. Many artists share their space so there is a chance there will be two artists at one location. The artist may use their yard, patio, part of their home or may sign up to show at Blue Bird Hall. For more information or to participate in the event, contact Joanie Evarts at 244-3378.
     The Welk Resorts is also looking for artists interested in featuring and selling art or crafts October 22 to 24. Mitzi Gaynor will be the headline entertainment at that time. There is no charge to be an exhibitor. For more information, call Joshua Carr at 760-3000, ext. 22148.

Republican Headquarters
     The Republican Campaign Headquarters in Sun City is hosted by Canyon Lake Republican Women. The address is 262812 Cherry Hills Blvd., next to the Community Cupboard and around the corner from Boston Billie’s. The group is looking for volunteers to help make phone calls, register voters and assist with campaign signs and bumper stickers, etc. Students looking for community service credit are welcome. Home Run for Hunger
     The Storm will hold its 3rd annual “Home Run for Hunger” today through Monday. Make a donation of four non-perishable food items between September 3 and 6 at the Diamond and receive one free box/reserved ticket to one of the games during those dates. Elks Lodge bingo
     Bingo will return to the Lake Elsinore/ Wildomar Elks Lodge beginning Thursday, September 9. Bingo is open to Elks and the general public. Doors open at 4 p.m. and games start at 6. The lodge is located at 33700 Mission Trail. Bingo is one of the ways the Elks raise funds for such charitable activities as scholarships to graduating seniors for both academic and vocational institutions, visiting hospitalized veterans, sponsoring both Cub and Boy Scouts and the annual free Thanksgiving dinner for seniors. Rotary Oktoberfest
     The Rotary Club of Lake Elsinore and Storm Events are looking for vendors interested in participating in the 3rd annual Oktoberfest at The Diamond on October 2 and 3. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. Vendors can sign up for a booth for both days through September 9 for $75; after that date the booth price rises to $90 until September 23. Community Bible study
     With fall comes the 2010-2011 Community Bible study, with this year’s theme, “Take It to Heart.” The study of the Book of Revelations promises to be another in-depth study of God’s Word for women.
     The host church is Lamb’s Fellowship at 21901 Railroad Canyon Rd.  Classes will be held on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon, beginning September 9. Lady Titans fundraiser
     Photography by GZ is offering a 90-minute professional photo shoot for $130 and will donate $30 to the Lady Titans basketball boosters for shoots booked through September. The shoot can take place in up to three locations within a 25-mile radius of the 92587 zip code. ‘Hypnolarious’ fundraiser
     A hypnosis and live comedy fundraiser to benefit Signature Farm’s Save the Animals Today Horse and Farm Animal Rescue will be held at Keyway’s Winery on Friday, September 10, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $18 online and $20 at the door.      Signature Farms invites families to its Sponsorship Appreciation Day on the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids and their family can tour the unique facility and meet the horses and other farm animals. The farm is a non-profit horse and farm animal rescue.

Tennis Open Play
     The Tennis Club invites members of the community to come out for Open Play on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8 a.m. It is open to all levels of players and is a way to meet other players without committing to a schedule.

Caregiver support group
     The Caregivers Connection support group is for caregivers and their patients and meets at Canyon Lake Community Church on the second and fourth Mondays of each month from 10 a.m. to noon in rooms C5 and C6. All meetings are confidential. Activities are planned for the caregiver and those for whom they are caring.

Animal sanctuary
     Community organizations, clubs or those interested in volunteer opportunities are invited to contact resident Van Robinson, who is available to speak and provide education about Meadowbrook Animal Sanctuary and Haven (MASH), located off Highway 74 in Lake Elsinore. The sanctuary is home to more than 125 animals that have been rescued by the organization. For more information, contact Van at 800-950-2444.

Clothing wanted
     A couple in Canyon Lake regularly makes deliveries of food and clothing to the Riverside City Mission, where the needs of the hungry and homeless are growing dramatically. Donations can be dropped off at the Coldwell Banker office in the Towne Center, 31620 Railroad Canyon Rd.

Alcoholics Anonymous

Sports offered
     Cornerstone Church in Wildomar offers a variety of sports weekly for ages 16 and up and any skill level. Grief support groups
     The GriefShare recovery seminar and support group meets at Grace Church each Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. The church is located at 29720 Goetz Rd. in Quail Valley. The seminar is led by Pastor Robert Butler and runs for 13 weeks. GriefShare features nationally recognized experts on grief and recovery topics. Pet Preparedness
     The Canyon Lake Emergency Preparedness Committee is in need of donations of pet supplies to keep in storage in the event of a disaster affecting the community. If the need arises to open a Red Cross shelter, there will be a need to house Canyon Lake pets, too, according to CLEP Director Nancy Carroll.
     There is a need for wire enclosures, leashes, collars, food and water dishes and toys, as well as clean blankets and small bathroom type rugs for bedding. For pick-up or directions for drop-off, call Ellen Dyer at 244-7763 or Nancy Carroll at 244-8230.

Free Fax Friday
     Debby Gagnon of Pack, Wrap and Post in the Canyon Lake Towne Center says she would like to help those who are currently seeking employment during these tough economic times by offering free use of the fax machine for the purpose of sending out resumes. Anyone interested in taking advantage of this offer is invited to stop by Pack, Wrap and Post on Fridays; no appointment is necessary. Debby says she will offer the service as long as she is able to do so.

Hospital volunteers needed
     Menifee Valley Medical Center is seeking volunteers. Only four hours of volunteer service per week qualifies one as an active member of the hospital volunteer team. Senior softball
     Softball players 55 and older are needed for a senior men’s league in Menifee. The league plays on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Wheatfield Park, next to the Menifee campus of Mt. San Jacinto Community College. For more information, call Ed Hustead at 679-8626.

Cruise Night

Computer Club
     The Computer Club of Menifee Valley welcomes all who have an interest in computers. It meets at 9 a.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month and offer presentations, guest speakers, question and answer sessions, a computer lab and computer classes. Child advocates needed
     The local organization of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children is seeking volunteers for its program. As trained advocates, CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court. No special education or background is needed – just a desire to help abused and neglected children. Volunteers must pass a background check, followed by a 30-hour training course. Thank the troops
     Xerox Corporation has created a simple way for citizens to thank military personnel overseas at www.letssaythanks.com. The sender selects a design and message, which is then personalized with the sender’s name and town. Xerox then prints and sends a postcard to a member of the military stationed overseas. It only takes a few minutes to send a postcard and say thanks.
