Water district congratulates POA for quagga prevention

     Boaters who have put up with paperwork, inspections and trips through the East Gate are to be congratulated for doing their part to keep quagga mussels out of the Lake, according to the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District Board of Directors, which presented a plaque to POA President Chuck Newsom and General Manager Dave Rudat during an August 12 meeting at EVMWD headquarters.
     The Canyon Lake POA has done a good job implementing a Quagga Mussel Prevention Program, while residents have been diligent to support the program, according to an EVMWD resolution, which states:
     WHEREAS, over recent decades, an invasive species of Zebra Mussel, Dreissena bugensis (“Quagga” mussel), has infested the Great Lakes region of the United States, clogging public and private infrastructure, damaging recreational assets, creating public nuisances and safety hazards, negatively impacting natural ecosystems, and costing millions of dollars in repairs and replacement of equipment; and
     WHEREAS, in 2008, infestations of Quagga mussels were found in the Colorado River, Metropolitan Water District’s Colorado River Aqueduct system, and several municipal reservoirs throughout Southern California that are supplied with Colorado River water; and
     WHEREAS, Canyon Lake is an invaluable asset to the community that surrounds it, providing residents scenic blue-water views and year-round boating, fishing, swimming, and other water-oriented recreation; and
     WHEREAS, the Property Owners Association (POA), recognizing the great recreational and economic value of the lake and realizing the POA’s unique ability to control boat access to the lake, wanted to protect Canyon Lake from damage to boats, docks, beaches and the natural environment that would be caused by a Quagga mussel infestation; and
     WHEREAS, the POA developed and implemented an innovative, smart Quagga Boat Inspection Program that has already proven successful in finding Quagga mussel-infested boats and thus preventing their introduction to Canyon Lake; and
     WHEREAS, the entire Canyon Lake community has been patient and supportive in the implementation of the POA’s program, one of the few private programs in the nation;
     THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Directors of the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District hereby commends the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association and its members for their leadership and resolve in diligently and proactively implementing the Quagga Boat Inspection Program to protect Canyon Lake from the infestation of Quagga mussels.
