Saying goodbye to summer and hello to fall

Labor Day traditionally marks the end of the lazy days of summer, though Canyon Lakers know it's far from being the end to hot weather. This was the last week of Taco Tuesday - that popular summer ritual that was more packed than ever last Tuesday. Over this cooler-than-usual summer, many Canyon Lake kids took advantage of Horse Camp, tennis lessons, ski lessons, swim lessons, art classes, reading programs, Jr. Golf and the Kids Fishing Derby. Adults? Well, they just had fun doing grown-up versions of all these activities, and then some. Saying hello to fall . . . Labor Day typically marks the beginning of the school year, though many Canyon Lake kids have already been in class almost three weeks. But with shorter days and cooler nights comes another treasured tradition: football! While the thrill of "Friday night lights" grips a large number of Canyon Lake families whose sons play for the Temescal Canyon Titans, there is an even broader audience for Sunday and Monday Night Football. The POA hopes to lure many of those fans to their own little corner of paradise at the new Lighthouse Bar and Grill, where there is a new menu and five high definition televisions tuned to every NFL game on the full Direct TV® NFL Sunday Ticket and sports package. Check out the menu and schedule in the article, "Try the new Lighthouse Bar and Grill at the Lodge." A different sort of crowd will be gathering at the Lodge on Friday nights as the Canyon Lake Bible Fellowship moves from Indian Beach to the Holiday Bay Room, beginning tonight, September 3, at 7 p.m. This time of worship and teaching is open to all Canyon Lake residents, including kids. To learn more, see the Club News section.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'The Takers'
If you decide to take part in a major bank heist, be sure your crew is cool, way cool. Sinatra and Clooney taught us that in “Ocean’s 11” and who could forget Wahlberg and Theron in “The Italian Job?” But, the youth movement begs for an urban hip hop cool. So here, the homies be stylin’ and chllin’ to some funky tunes – know what we mean?

Notes From the Road: Taking photos in nature's unfenced zoos
Off in the distance, beyond the roadside fence, an Antilocapra Americana stood gazing quietly out across the Colorado prairie. At first it seemed odd to see a Pronghorn antelope by itself. Travelers through the American West will often encounter these beautiful creatures in herds, from a few to several dozen.

Betsy's Best Bets: Friendship starter not so obvious with gray goo
So maybe it wasn’t exactly the response I had expected, but I probably should have known better. Looking back on the whole thing, I really shouldn’t be surprised that she was baffled and seemed ungrateful. After all, I did just hand my nice next-door neighbor a Ziplock bag full of gray goo and acted like it was a real gift.

On behalf of the Temescal Canyon High School football family, we would like to thank everyone who made our annual “Welcome Family Picnic” a success this last Saturday at Holiday Harbor.

Letter: Senior softball
I really enjoy reading about the Menifee Senior League (The Friday Flyer, August 27). I played with Rex Finley and in the league from 1995 until I left California in 2002. I played with Rex (one of the finest gentleman I have ever met on or off the field) and I was the one responsible to get Dennis McCoy to play senior softball.
