Catfish cuties

The last day of 2010 was lucky for young Matt Sailer, 7, second from left, who caught a catfish weighing more than 10 lbs. Adding to his triumph was sharing the occasion with his sister, Mary, brothers, Nick and William, and cousins, Benjamin and Julia Yousif, who are pictured on Matt’s Channel Way Dr. dock.

Golfers encourage teen's dedication to sport
It is very unusual for a 13-year-old to show up at a golf course to play and practice for hours by himself; unless, of course, he is Hunter Newlin, a 7th grader at Canyon Lake Middle School, according to local golfer Brent Blount.

Polar Bears to ski tomorrow
It’s Polar Bear season! The Canyon Lake Ski Club will host its popular Polar Bear Day tomorrow, January 8, from 9 a.m. to noon. According to coordinator Bruce Yarbrough, skiers, barefooters, hydrofoilers and wakeboarders are invited to brave the Lake’s chilly waters (with temperatures in the low to mid-50s) without wetsuits.

The Friday Flyer’s 2010 Photos of the Week celebrated Canyon Lake living at its most picturesque – sunsets, lake scenes, critters, community activities and other special moments captured by mostly amateur photographers who are residents or weekenders in Canyon Lake.

CL family involved with 9/11 Tribute float
The year 2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001. In the months ahead, Americans likely will see many tributes to the victims and heroes whose lives were transformed by that dark day. Among those tributes is a Tournament of Roses 9/11 Tribute float that has special significance to Canyon Lakers Jason and Adriana Ghorbani and their daughter, Allison.

City Connection: Residents offer news of weekend incidents
According to Canyon Lake resident and volunteer news photographer Ruben Flores, residents in the 23500 block of Canyon Lake Dr. North were awakened in the early hours of December 31 by a loud crash that occurred at around 3:50 a.m.

City Connection: Emergency Response training begins next week
Many Canyon Lake residents will have a desire to help their community in the event of a disaster. Emergency Preparedness Committee Director Nancy Carroll appreciates this spirit of volunteerism and says the community will definitely have to depend on its own resources in the first few days following a major disaster. However, training is the key to being an effective volunteer.

The January Chamber of Commerce luncheon will be held on Wednesday, January 12, at 11:30 a.m. in the banquet room at Pepe’s Restaurant. Ron Martel, a national executive with IBM and winner of national awards, will be speaking on business development directly benefiting businesses large and small.

Chamber Notes: Nominate deserving persons for recognition
Do you have a friend or neighbor who volunteers his or her time to make Canyon Lake a better place to live? Perhaps you know a teenager who serves the community and is an example of everything that’s good about the younger generation. Who would you say should be Citizen of the Year or Business of the Year?

CLLL baseball and softball signups to be held tomorrow
Oil up the mitts! Canyon Lake Little League will be holding signups for youth baseball and girls softball on January 8 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Towne Center Conference Room (below the POA office) or online at canyonlakelittleleague.com. Sign-ups will end on January 16 and all late signups will be put on a waiting list.

This is a year for great dates: January 1 was 01-01-11– or for people who leave off the zeroes: 1-1-11. Next Tuesday is 1-11-11. Best yet will be November’s date of 11-11-11, which the City of Canyon Lake already plans to commemorate with a combined Veterans Day and 9-11 remembrance, and the unveiling of a Veterans Memorial.

Where Are They Now?: Man finds rewards of service in Peace Corps
Former resident Justin Hitchcock is staying in a small agricultural community in the mountains of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, learning what it’s like to live in a Third World country. On Christmas Eve, for example, he and the family with whom he lives prepared an entire pig they roasted for seven hours, eating almost every part of it, including the tongue, ears, intestine, liver and hooves.

We aren’t getting the type of reform we need in Canyon Lake. I was shocked to see they used the same contract guidelines for the new Golf Pro that the old Golf Pro had (allegedly never reviewed by an attorney).

Girl Scout Daisy Troop 1741 of Canyon Hills received a visit from Santa at their Christmas party held at The Cup Above. The girls and their mothers had dinner and painted ornaments.

Surrounded by family and friends on Thanksgiving Day, Roy “Donald” Gude announced his engagement to Cindy Galdamez.

Announcement: Azusa Pacific University graduates
Several Canyon Lake residents graduated from Azusa Pacific University on December 18. They were joined by nearly 700 graduates at the winter commencement ceremonies.

In Memoriam: Francis "Frank" Miller
Francis “Frank” Neely Miller, 82, passed on to heaven Sunday, January 2, at his residence in Canyon Lake. Frank was the youngest of seven children and was raised on a country farm in Puxico, Missouri.

In Memoriam: Mary Zeitler
Mary Louise Zeitler, 87, known to many as the spunky lady waving to passing golfers from behind the third green, made her final wave goodbye at her home on December 28, 2010, after a brief illness. 

In Memoriam: Judy Lynch
Former resident Judy Ann Lynch, 64, passed away on December 13, 2010. She was born on November 28, 1946 and lived in Canyon Lake from 1992 until 2000. She continued to work in Canyon Lake, cleaning homes and taking care of pets.

Golf News: 35th annual Walker Cup results announced
The Walker Cup golf tournament was celebrated on Monday, December 27, with 62 players participating on the sunny day. Pat and Kathy Walker conducted a blind-draw for partners. Some men had two partners, as there were more women than men this year.

The Family Golf Club held it 2nd annual Glo Ball Golf Tournament and New Year’s Party on New Year’s Eve at the Country Club.

The Women’s Golf Club held its annual Christmas Tournament and Installation of 2011 officers on December 21.

Cotillion signups for 2011 will be held tonight, January 7, from 6:45 to 9 p.m. It is open to 4th through 12th grade students – generally ages 9 and up.

This week’s pets are Jack and Shelley. Jack is an energetic 6-year-old Labrador retriever. Shelley is a 3-year-old spayed, domestic, shorthaired female with tortoise-shell coloring.

Board meeting to be held second Tuesday
The Board of Directors normally meets the first Tuesday of the month; however, because of the busy holiday schedule, the meeting was postponed until Tuesday, January 11, at 7 p.m. in the Boardroom. Can't come to the meeting? Watch it on Time Warner Channel 29 or Verizon Channel 39.

Association seeking to fill Director of Finance position
The CLPOA is recruiting for a Director of Finance. The position will manage a staff of three employees and one contract IT consultant.

Only two weeks remaining until 'Fit Community' 5K/10K
The Fit Community 5K/10K event is just two weeks away on Saturday, January 22. Already, 165 racers have registered to participate.

Watch NFL, bowl games at Bar & Grill
The Lighthouse Bar and Grill will open at noon tomorrow, January 8, in time for the 1:30 p.m. NFL playoff between New Orleans and Seattle, and the 5 p.m. playoff between New York and Indianapolis. On Sunday, the Bar and Grill will open at 9 a.m. for NFL playoff games and college bowl games.

Country Club: Try 8 oz. Ribeye at the Country Club
The Country Club once again is open for dinner on Friday nights.

Seniors ring in the New Year at Senior Center party
A capacity crowd of seniors celebrated the New Year with a catered dinner and music by Frankie Dino singing "Rat Pack" and "Vintage Las Vegas" music.

Did you know the Canyon Lake POA now offers Traffic School? Any member, their lessees or guests could be eligible to attend Traffic School for any moving violation, both on the street and on the Lake.

Making a right turn?
On the subject of driving, did you know the striping changed at the corner of Vacation Dr. and Canyon Lake Dr. South? What once was a "dotted access line" next to the multi-purpose lane is now a solid line separating the traffic lane from the multi-purpose lane.

Classes and Activities

Classes and Activities: Computer Classes
The POA is offering a new schedule of computer classes that begin in January. Register at Member Services, making checks payable to the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association.

Classes and Activities: Guitar lessons
A four-week Guitar Class will begin Monday, January 17, and be offered each Monday at 7 p.m. until February 7 in the Sunset Beach Room at the Lodge. The four-week session is just $50.

Classes and Activities: Learn to paint
Rita Forand's painting classes are continuing at the Lodge. The POA will sponsor an oil painting class to paint this wintry scene on Sunday, January 16, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Pool View Room at the Lodge.

Planning and Compliance: It's time to take down holiday decor
New Year's Day and the following days are usually the time when everyone starts to unwind from the holiday season. Many people have had parties and gatherings with friends and family and enjoyed the holidays, and many are looking forward to the start of the New Year.
