This Week's Official CLPOA News

'Haunted House' was cancelled - but why?
Costumes, haunted houses, harvest festivals and trick-or-treating are just a few of the activities adults and children are thinking about this weekend. Canyon Lake children can look forward to the Parade of Frights and Fun Zone Saturday morning in the Towne Center and a Harvest Faire at Canyon Lake Community Church on Halloween night. The weekend weather outlook appears to be just about perfect.

Arts, Entertainment and Halloween activities
Here is a line-up of activities taking place this weekend and in the coming few weeks in and around Canyon Lake.

War holds a deeper meaning to this veteran
In the weeks leading up to a very special Veterans Day event on November 11, The Friday Flyer is featuring stories about several Canyon Lake veterans.

A Master's degree in Military History: why now?
At the age of 57, I walked across the stage at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont and received a Master of Arts degree in Military History. That day was the 28th of June, 2009, and it marked the culmination of two years spent in intensive study and writing. I had read approximately 40,000 pages and wrote another 1,000 pages of essays, group discussions, short and long papers, and then a final capstone. As I pondered what I had accomplished, I realized that the journey was in fact more rewarding than the destination.

City Connection: Residents invited to participate in Turkey Drive
It’s not too early to think about helping the less fortunate during the holidays. A Turkey Drive to benefit HOPE (Helping Our People Elsinore) will be held at Canyon Lake City Hall on Tuesday, November 1, between 2 and 5 p.m.

City Connection: City building codes apply to patio covers, enclosures
The City of Canyon Lake reminds its residents that any modifications/additions of patio enclosures made to existing homes require a building permit from the City of Canyon Lake.

City Connection: Roadrunner Park fire
Canyon Lake residents Ruben Flores and Heather Amato snapped photos of a fire that occurred at Roadrunner Park at about 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26.

City Connection: Honor vets
Canyon Lakers will have the opportunity to honor veterans and active-duty service members at a Veterans Day Ceremony in the Towne Center on Friday, November 11, beginning at 10 a.m. This year's event will be special in that the City will unveil the Veterans Memorial in the newly landscaped pocket park at the back center of the Towne Center.

City Connection: Stop by the Library
Children can look forward to a new craft event at the Canyon Lake Library. Gale Bjelland, a retired Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) instructional service specialist from Riverside Unified School District will offer a craft class for children on November 2 at 4:30 p.m. Parents wishing to expose their children to more arts and crafts, or give them a chance to use their imagination, can attend this event, which is scheduled to be held monthly.

Canyon Lake Crime Stats
Riverside Sheriffs Perris Station provided these bi-weekly part 1 crime stats for the two-week period of September 27 to October 10, 2011. The map of incidents in Canyon Lake was not included in this report.

City Connection
Residents are invited to attend the City Council meeting on Wednesday, November 2, at 6:30 p.m. in the Municipal Board Room. The meeting will be televised on Time Warner Channel 29 and Verizon Channel 39. The agenda can be viewed at www.cityofcanyonlake.com. Plus other news and notes of interest for residents and Businesses in Canyon Lake.

Chamber Notes
Businesses are invited to pass out candy during tomorrow’s Parade of Frights, which begins at 9 a.m. in the Towne Center. Trick-or-treating to businesses begins at 10.

1957 Chevy selected as Car of the Month
Ken and Jo Whitney’s red, two-door ‘57 Chevy Belair hardtop was selected as the Canyon Lake Car Club’s October Car of the Month. The Whitney’s Chevy also was featured in this year’s Canyon Lake Car Show logo, used on the promotional posters and T-shirts.

Moms suggest ways to use leftover Halloween candy
The following suggestion are provided by Jill Cooper and Tawra Kellam of www.LivingOnADime.com.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'The Three Musketeers'
Everyone loves the remake of a classic. But, we’re not sure the makers of the “Resident Evil” series are the best qualified to continue such a tradition. Producer/Director Paul W.S. Anderson and wife Milla Jovovich lead an international production of what may be the 50th film adaptation of the ever popular Alexandre Dumas’ “The Three Musketeers.”

Cook's Corner: Corn Dog Casserole provides fun family fare
It’s official. The last one closed over a week ago. I’ve missed all the local county fairs this year.

Teen Talk: Why can't Halloween be on last Saturday of October
This year I turn 17 the day after Halloween. Its really not that old, but it does signify that I have had at least 16 years of experiencing “Trick or Treating.” When people have over 16 years of experience in something they earn the right to be considered an expert. So let’s just go with that, and continue on the thought that maybe, just maybe, my years of celebrating this day might allow enough thought to encourage a nationwide change.

Wild Side of Canyon Lake: Bold diggers are unwelcome guests in CL
We have new neighbors in our cul-de-sac. No, actually they have moved in with us – uninvited. I was sitting in my chair one recent morning when a quick movement outside my west-facing sliding glass door caught my eye. A moment later it flashed by again, going the other way. It was a California ground squirrel. I was not pleased by its visit. I feared it would stay. It has.

Letter: Directors' rhetoric
After reading the comments attributed to our POA Vice-President and POA Treasurer at the recent meeting held by the City for the Canyon Lake businesses, I have to ask for the specific unreasonable restrictions the City officials have placed on the Motorcycle Club’s request for the Haunted House at the Lodge.

Letter: Community building
I think we need many more questions answered before we are ready or able to build more facilities for the Tennis Club.

Letter: Fire Services
This letter is a “thank you” to  the Fire Department committee for their hard work slogging through details. Since the committee finalized its report, even more cities are in financial distress over public safety.

Letter: Phone scam
There is a scam that Canyon Lake people should know about. For months now, a person who says he is the manager of Winnings International has been calling me, stating that I have won between $1 and $5 million. Each time he calls he uses a different name and also changes the amount I won.

Letter: Sean McDonald comments
Here in Canyon Lake, we on occasion struggle with jurisdictional responsibilities between the POA and the City. In the case of fire services, I think we all agree that the City has responsibility.

Letter: Lioness garage sale
The Canyon Lake Lioness Club would like to thank all those who came to our garage sale last weekend. Thanks to purchases and donations we will be able to help many families at Thanksgiving and Christmas again this year. Thank you to The Friday Flyer for the great article.

Letter: Sweeney Todd
Over the years, I’ve seen my fair share of community and high school plays – some better than others. The Temescal Canyon High School Drama Department continually raises the bar with  outstanding productions and, this year, drama teacher and director Tara Miller delivers a play that is perfect for the Halloween season: “Sweeny Todd.”

Letter: Armed security force
I am very concerned about having armed security in Canyon Lake. I do not think this is necessary in Canyon Lake. They would be POA employees. What about liability when a POA member gets shot. How much will workman’s comp insurance cost us. This is a done deal unless members let the Board know we don’t want this. My opinion.

Letter: Hired gun
There are many concerns about the possible “hired gun” issue. Our POA Board is looking into hiring people to work in our City and carry guns. As citizens of Canyon Lake who have questions regarding this issue, now is the time to attend POA Board meetings to ask questions and share one’s thoughts with the POA Board.

Steve was awarded Best of Show, Best of Division and 1st Place for his hand-carved chess board, topped with individually cut ceramic tiles and individually molded, fired and painted chess pieces.

Senior dogs are excellent companions for people of all ages and are a great match for those in their golden years, according to AFV spokesperson Kirsti Peffers.
