Veterans honored

Retired Major Bill Disbrow was on hand for last Friday's Veterans Day ceremony and the unveiling of the new Veterans Memorial Monument, as well as to see the commemorative brick honoring his service. As a military pilot, Bill flew combat missions during World War II and the Korean War. After 21 years in the Air Force, he retired as a Major in 1961 and went on to teach math and mechanics in Los Angeles. |

This Week's Lead Stories
This Week's Official CLPOA News
Ceremony unites community to honor vets
Love of country, especially when one’s country is threatened by outsiders, is that deep passion that helps brings people together in a spirit of unity. When it’s time to pledge allegiance to the flag and honor those who have served this nation – as Canyon Lakers did last Friday at the Veterans Day ceremony – petty bickering takes a back seat. As Pastor Pete Van Dyke, of Canyon Lake Community Church, later pointed out, “For a short while, our community was what it could be.”
Ceremony emcee has close ties to Canyon Lake
There were many untold stories represented at the third annual Veterans Day ceremony on November 11, 2011. Hats from every branch of the military on the heads of veterans, along with the uniforms of active duty military personnel in attendance, could attest to that.
Flyover of T34 planes honor City's veterans
An enthusiastic crowd waved flags and cheered from the Veterans Day event in the Towne Center on November 11 as two planes appeared out of the low clouds, trailing smoke and flying in close formation over the ceremony. The smoke was created by pouring oil on the manifold. A third plane was unable to make the flight because of a maintenance issue.
11-11-11 photographs
Splashes of red, white and blue were in stark contrast to gloomy skies during the Veterans Day Ceremony. The Friday Flyer received scores of photographs from volunteer photographers; a few of which are found here.
Marine isn't forgotten
Veterans Day was a memorable event in Canyon Lake for many of the local veterans, and some active duty service members presently serving away from their Canyon Lake homes appreciated the fact that they were being remembered.
Canyon Laker in Kabul
Master Sgt. Linda Welz, at right, the daughter of Bill and Molly Evans of Canyon Lake, took The Friday Flyer to Kabul Afghanistan in October while delivering humanitarian supplies with the 452nd Air Mobility Wing.

There are plenty of holiday activities and entertainment in and around Canyon Lake listed here that will help spread good cheer this holiday season, including the JWC Holiday Boutique, Gary Bonner Singers, Parade of Lights, Holiday Home Tour, Golf Cart Parade, Lancer Players \\\'Once in a Lifetime\\\' play, Unity in the Community, Tree Lighting and more...
City Connection: Police chief stops by Mayor's Coffee
Coffee with the Mayor drew a smaller group than normal on November 10 at the Sports Stop. Mayor Barry Talbot was joined by Canyon Lake’s new Chief of Police John Hill. Barry usually holds his meetings the Thursday following the City Council meeting but had to make a schedule change this month.
City Connection: Turkeys for HOPE
Canyon Lake City Hall collected a total of 54 turkeys, three hams and all the fixings during a Turkey Drive to benefit HOPE (Helping Our People Elsinore) on November 1. Those who would like to donate gift cards, turkeys or food to the local food pantry should call 245-7510 or e-mail hopeinelsinore@aol.com.
Parade of Lights just three weeks away
“With the busy fall that all of us are experiencing, and Thanksgiving just around the corner, it is time to remind everyone that the parade is only three weeks away on Saturday, December 10,” says Parade of Lights spokesperson Dennis Pitts. “That does not mean you need to panic if you were planning to put your boat in the parade and have not gotten started yet. But it does mean that now is the time to get things going.”
TCHS Golf wins league, sends players to finals
The Temescal Canyon High School Girls Golf Team went undefeated in league, 10-0, to win the Sunbelt League Championship for 2011.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'J. Edgar'
Not too long ago, the name J. Edgar Hoover was synonymous with the FBI (and trench coats). He built and led the Bureau for almost a half century as the most respected and feared man in America, by good and bad guys alike. He may be the source of the quip, “It’s not what you know and not who you know, but what you know about who you know.”
Teen Talk: Date to make a wish
Make a wish! This moment, 11-11-11 11:11, was filled with wishful people and wishful thoughts. Many people rushed to the altar to be wed on this lucky day. Others believed that this would be a great day to bring new life into the world, as the number 1 does represent new beginnings.
Letter: A salute to veterans event
What a wonderful day on Friday, November 11, 2011. The day was so beautiful and the sun so bright. The Veterans Ceremony was perfection. Enough thanks cannot be extended to the City of Canyon Lake, the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce, the Canyon Lake Merchant Owners Association and the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association.
Letter: Veterans Day thank yous
The 2011 Veterans Day celebration was our gift to veterans and active duty armed service members. The committee of Bert Barbay, Karen Bevans, Sue Bonner, Susanne Cordeiro, Ginny Farris, Carol Froehlich, Debby Gagnon, Michelle Gordon, Nancy Greenhalgh, Deborah Harrington, Steve Hipsak, Ellen Iacono, Lynn Jensen, Lori Moss, Donna Nunez, Mary Petty, Bryan Pitotti, John Stone, Barry Talbot, Jack Wamsley, Sherry Way, Nancie Weber, Jill Battanich, and Art Zasio served in many capacities.
Letter: A marvelous tribute
The Friday Flyer’s 300-word limit for Letters to the Editor is far too inadequate to fully describe our appreciation for the wonderful Veterans Day memorial program last Friday, 11-11-11.
Letter: Lawsuit against City
Regarding the lawsuit against the City of Canyon Lake regarding the unfortunate drowning accident that occurred on December 22, 2010, we have to ask where our police force was that night? Canyon Lake contracts with Riverside County Sheriff to keep our City safe.
Letter: Director comments unacceptable
I believe last week’s dark humor piece, Letter to the Editor “Open Carry,” is a direct response to Larry Neigel’s public comment in The Friday Flyer telling everyone that it is lawful to carry a gun inside our private community. This comment came from one of our so-called security experts. The letter from Larry was totally irresponsible and unacceptable from a Board member.
Letter: Pious intonations
Mr. Parson’s letter of last week more closely resembles the pious intonations of some cloistered monk. It is a fact that many people living in Canyon Lake are here because, among other things, they don’t care to live in liberal-dominated communities. I sure didn’t.
Letter: Road to disaster
The lack of competent management of Canyon Lake has taken a huge toll on this City over the last few years. We have endured the unfriendly business environment proposing having all real estate agents to pay for business licenses, the temporary sign restrictions, private parties at homes in the private community of Canyon Lake having to pay the City for a permit on private property for a home party and all the resistance over the Pepe’s sign.
Letter: Beware of phone scams
If someone calls and asks for you to wire money, be sure it the person they say they are. Ask a question only would know the answer to. I was so positive I was talking to my grandson, I didn’t question him and got scammed for $7,000. Don’t let it happen to you.
Letter: Invalid assertions
In the Member Communications article printed in the November 4th edition of The Friday Flyer, POA Board Secretary Haggerty makes invalid assertions that essentially compare apples to pomegranates. Amenity utilization figures and expenditures pertaining to Gault Field, Happy Camp and the Equestrian Center are compared to the proposed tennis building.
Letter: Concert a blast
The Robert Holts Big Band was a blast! The Lodge rocked Saturday night as a full house audience was transported from New York to Rio and back to LA by the swinging Robert Holts Orchestra.
Letter: Security Department
I believe the POA is moving in the correct direction by considering their own security department. I had a poor experience with Allied Barton over the Labor Day weekend, which I did report to the POA. My two young daughters and myself were camping in the Campground with friends and there was some very drunk individuals that were acting terribly and using profanity with a total disregard for the children and families.

Tim Mahoney, a woodworker and guitar builder from Canyon Lake, was thrilled to learn that his “Roadrunner” guitar won the 1st Place award in the Master Stringed Instrument Division at the 2011 Orange County Fair.
