Eight announce candidacy for 2011 Board of Directors
Eight residents have announced their candidacy for the POA Board of Directors as of the 3 p.m. deadline on February 25. In the order announced by the POA, they are Steven Salazar, Janice O'Rourke, Bruce Yarbrough, George Middle, Dawn Haggerty, Sean McDonald, Lawrence Neigel and George Irvine.
Banquet will fete Chamber of Commerce honorees
The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce will honor several citizens and a business when the organization holds its annual Installation and Awards Banquet Friday, March 18, at the Lodge. Reservations for the banquet must be made by Monday, March 7.
Progress is made in septic tank issue affecting lake water quality
In January, the City of Menifee hired an engineering firm to design a sewer system for an area of neighboring Quail Valley that now relies on septic tanks, bringing Canyon Lake that much closer to resolving some of its own water quality issues.
Changes are coming in the neighborhood
In the months (and years) ahead, it appears Canyon Lake will be getting some new neighbors and losing at least one old neighbor. First for the loss: most have heard by now that Albertsons is closing its supermarket at the corner of Newport and Murrieta Roads in Sun City by the end of February.
Ad hoc committee seeks solutions for public safety
A committee appointed to study Canyon Lake’s current and future public safety needs has been meeting weekly since January. The issue? Canyon Lake’s fire and police services will cost almost a million dollars more than the City’s projected revenue in fiscal year 2011-12 if the City continues to contract with Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department to receive the same level of services residents now enjoy. The City already had to dip into its reserves to help pay for fire services this year.

Movie Review: Oscar picks
Another terrific year at the movies brought creative features such as “Inception,” “Black Swan” and “Hereafter.” We saw the action-thrillers “Unstoppable,” “Salt” and “Takers.” The sequels remained plentiful with “Iron Man,” “Harry Potter,” “Twilight,” “Shrek” and “Wall Street.” Finally, the veterans delivered “Red, “A-Team” and “Expendables.” This Sunday night, the Academy will select their favorites.

The recent The Friday Flyer printed the ěVoice of the People.î The letters from the three contributors on February 11 made very forceful allegations regarding the POA Boardís response to specific requests. If these allegations are factual, the page should be beneficial toward effecting changes to the bylaws by the POA, in the response to the peopleís letters published in the ěVoice.

I would like to thank Dave Harrigan for his thoughts on cleaning up our Lake water. I do agree it is something to be preserved. I am sure everyone must agree it is bad when the algae turns up.
Letter: Litmus test
The Canyon Lake POA has made numerous mistakes during the past 10 years. The Katana software disaster and the ill-fated dredging contracts come to mind. These mistakes have cost each of us hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. POA management continues to whitewash problems and keep Canyon Lake residents in the dark about a number of serious allegations and issues.

The Canyon Lake Jr. Women’s Club (JWC) will host its 2nd annual Charity Golf Tournament on March 19 at the Canyon Lake Golf Course. Signups are being accepted for the Family Golf Club Jack and Jill “Swing into Spring,” scheduled for Saturday, March 12. The Canyon Lake 9ers will be hosting the Canyon Lake 18ers on St. Patrick’s Day. Animal Friends of the Valleys will hold its “Fore the Animals Golf Tournament” on Friday, April 29, at The Golf Club of Rancho California in Murrieta.

Adopt-a-Pet: Chloe and Snuggle Bug
This week’s pets are Chloe and Snuggle Bug. Chloe is a 7-year-old female, purebred Great Dane that is chocolate-colored and not spayed. Snuggle Bug is a calico, longhaired cat that likes to snuggle and purr.
Photo of the Week: Double rainbow
Several people took pictures of the double rainbow that appeared at the end of the Christmas Week Storm. The sun came out soon afterward, so continuing to print rainbow pictures didn't quite fit. However, recent rains have provided an excuse to print more of these lovely pictures. This one is by Lucy Coffield.

POA Board Agenda for March 2011
The regular session meeting of the Board of Directors will be held Tuesday, March 1, at 7 p.m. in the Towne Center Board Room.
Annual Meeting and Election Calendar
"Intent to Run" forms for the position of POA Director are due today, February 25, by 3 p.m. The names of those who are running for the Board of Directors will be posted on the lobby bulletin board in the POA Administrative Building, as well as on the POA website at canyonlakepoa.com and The Friday Flyer's website at fridayflyer.com.
Clear member accounts by March 16 in time to vote
Canyon Lake Property Owners are reminded they have until Wednesday, March 16, 2011, to clear their accounts, pay off fines and catch up on their POA dues if they want to vote for new Directors at the General Meeting in May. Only “Members in Good Standing” will be allowed to vote.
Boating season is almost here – here are helpful hints
To register a boat, the following items are needed.

The Lighthouse Bar and Grill is featuring NASCAR on its indoor and outdoor screens. A highlight of the weekend is the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at the International Raceway on Sunday.

The Country Club hosted a "Kickin' Cowboy Buffet" and special concert by Kenny Miller on February 18.
Planning and Compliance: Screen propane tanks, AC, trashcans
Along with everything else these days, the cost of electricity has skyrocketed, which has led some people to consider alternate sources of power. Some have elected to install propane tanks and others have gone with solar panels. The CC&Rs declare that every tank for the storage of fuel installed outside any building in the community shall be buried below ground or otherwise completely screened to the satisfaction of the Architectural Control Committee (ACC).

The Canyon Lake Property Owners Association Rules and Regulations Section VII-D.3 states on non-motorized sailboats and manually propelled boats (i.e., rowboats, kayaks, canoes and paddle boats) one approved life jacket for each person on board must be worn by all persons under 12 years of age.

Fish out of Water – The Fish Out of Water class, with low-impact aerobics and exercising to music, meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the Holiday Bay Room at the Lodge.
Senior Activities: Monthly Potluck and Dance is Sunday
All seniors of the community are invited to the monthly Potluck and Dance that begins at 5 p.m. this Sunday, February 27. This is a good place to meet and actively get involved with other seniors. Guests provide the food; the Senior Committee provides the entertainment.
Happy Camp offers spring break special
The Campground is offering its Happy Camp “Spring Break Special.” With this special, campers who stay four days pay for three days and those who stay seven days pay for five days. The special begins February 28 and ends May 22.

POA traffic school is held the last Tuesday of every month, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room. The next class is March 29.
