Pastel glory

There's just no getting around it – sunrise and sunset are the favorite time of day for Canyon Lake photographers, especially when cotton candy clouds abound to reflect their pink and lavender glory into the Lake. Karen DeSalvo was the one to capture this scene. While the clouds are still here and the hills are still green, photography bugs are urged to take lots of pictures. The Friday Flyer's files of B-1 photos is getting low!

This Week's Official CLPOA News

Candidates weigh in on Police Report
Just over a year ago, residents learned about a then recently completed audit (later revealed to be a POA management audit that, by law, could not be made public).

Volunteers making a difference
Some people talk about what’s wrong with Canyon Lake. But then there are the folks who roll up their sleeves and actually make Canyon Lake better. For starters, there are the volunteers of the Tuesday Work Group (TWG) who are pictured working on a Golf Course cart path across from the 7th green.

See 'Comedy Tonite'
Canyon Lake Community Theatre will present “A Comedy Tonite” tonight, March 25, and Saturday, March 26, at 7 p.m. at the Lodge. This unique genre of theater, often referred to as the “Theatre of Imagination,” will have the audience laughing through a myriad of funny sketches presented throughout the evening, according to Director Barbara Egbert.

Donate e-waste tomorrow at CLMS

City Connection: Citizens will have opportunity to vote on tax
Over the next several months, the citizens of Canyon Lake will be asked to consider a public safety tax measure (Measure E) that will ensure the continuation of the present levels of police and fire protection services over the next five years by helping to eliminate a temporary budget shortfall. The reason for this measure is a combination of decreased tax revenues and increased public safety costs to the City.

City Connection: Worried about your mortgage?
“Can I or should I keep my home?” That is a question many are asking these days. There will be a free class tomorrow, March 26, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Lamb’s Fellowship in Lake Elsinore that will help answer that question. Lamb’s Fellowship is located at 21901 Railroad Canyon Rd.

City Connection: Volunteers wanted to help prepare for disaster
Even before the recent 9.0 earthquake in Japan, the Canyon Lake Emergency Preparedness Committee (CLEPC) made a decision that the next time this area experiences a temblor of 5.0 or greater, certain members of the committee automatically will go into drill mode.

City Connection: Only a few days left to comment on pylon sign
The City of Canyon Lake is re-circulating the Initial Study originally compiled for the Canyon Lake Towne Center Multi-Tenant Pylon Sign. The project consists of replacing the existing pylon sign at the entrance to the Towne Center with a new multi-tenant pylon sign.

Last Saturday's "Shake, Rattle and Roll" concert with Elvis impersonator Scot Bruce showed that if there is one thing to be said about Canyon Lake's older generation, they really know how to have fun.

Arts and Entertainment
Providing music and dancing to the tunes made popular by the “Rat Pack” will be part of the ambiance that DJ Kevro will help create tonight at the Canyon Lake Royal Court’s “Italian Night” at the Links at Summerly.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Limitless'
These days you can take a pill to lose weight, run faster or get stronger. But, what if there was a pill to make you rich and powerful by making you smarter? That’s kind of a no-brainer, pun intended. So, quench your thirst for knowledge without having to work for it. It can advance your wild ask guesses by quantum leaps.

Daytripping With Mary: Day-tripper's weekend offers 'favorite things'
Have you ever made a list of what makes you happy? I realized how I was able to enjoy a few of my favorite things on a recent weekend. Happiness follows when we indulge in our favorite pastimes. Here’s a recap of some around-town activities I enjoyed.

Notes From a Road Once Taken: Part 1 - Travels through U.K. with elderly '14-year-olds'
There are several ways to go traveling abroad. One way is to book a tour and report to the bus on time early every morning. Another is to buy a plane ticket, rent a car and take your chances when you get where you’re going.

Letter: Dancing in the aisles
“Elvis” truly was in the building last Saturday night at the Canyon Lake Lodge!

Letter: Personal attacks
In all my years of being associated with Canyon Lake, I have never ever seen a sitting corporate manager and sitting Board members attack residents running for the Board by name at Board meetings and in print. What Chuck Newsom, Michelle Gordon and Dave Rudat are doing, and possibly Steve Salazar, is totally wrong and just plain self serving.

Letter: Case closed
There are ongoing, vicious e-mail attacks by Sean McDonald on people who volunteer their time to serve on the Board of Directors and other various committees (e.g. Finance, ACC). They are attacked and accused of wrongdoing or being part of a vast conspiracy to defraud Canyon Lake. All because they do not do what Mr. McDonald wants.

Letter: Shake things up
Here we go again with the POA board elections and this time I know that the good people of Canyon Lake are sick and tired of the same old thing and I hope they are not going to take it anymore!

Letter: Pepe's pylon sign
Ask yourselves what is appropriate for this community. A Pepe’s sign, which will be a new pylon sign. A sign that should have been removed when the building was reconstructed and never was. A sign that will be given a variance, which will set precedence for others.

Letter: Altered Police Report
Last week, copies of an altered “Police Report” were distributed throughout our community. A copy was dropped at my front door and a copy found its way to my personal mail slot in the City Hall.

Letter: Protecting wrongdoers
After reading the recently released Police Report on allegations of theft and embezzlement by management and employees of Canyon Lake POA, I was disturbed by not only the possible loss of funds, but by the past Board members lack of attention to complaints by both the community and the POA employees.

Letter: What is best for us
In light of the country’s financial collapse 2 1/2 years ago and its continued effects, the huge gas prices five years ago, which deleted extra income, the current gas increases hitting when there’s no extra income for many, and motivated by The Friday Flyer articles in the last few weeks, I felt compelled to join the responders regarding the current proposals and intents of the POA.

Letter: 56 cents a day
Our City Council made the tough decision to put on the Ballot Measure E – Safety Tax. The primary source of the City’s revenue is through property tax collection. Canyon Lake’s revenue has been slashed drastically due to the decline in property values.

Letter: In favor of over-seeding
Shortly after declaring my candidacy for the Board of Directors, I was asked if I would vote to resume over-seeding the Golf Course fairways in the winter. I replied in writing to several members of the Men’s and Women’s Golf Clubs that if I were on the Board and an action item came to the Board for approval, I would vote “yes” to over-seeding the fairways.

Letter: Reduce expenses
At the risk of offending some readers, it is time to speak up about the two major issues affecting Canyon Lake. One is the increased POA assessments and the other is the City’s newly proposed “public safety” (fire station) tax. Both have to do with budgets and additional revenue.
