Silver lining

This photograph of the entrance to Gold and Silver Coves, taken by Pastor Pete's wife, Pat Van Dyke, reminded her of a promise that she says gives her hope. She wrote, "Thank you, Lord, that whenever I go through a storm, near the end all I have to do is look up to see the silver linings."

This Week's Official CLPOA News

Good 'Blood' makes Canyon Lake proud
Arlie and Lucille Blood celebrated their wedding anniversary at the bowling alley on February 16 – not so unusual for a 6th or 18th or maybe even 34th wedding anniversary, right? When two people like to bowl it’s as good as anywhere else to celebrate. But Arlie and Lucille weren’t celebrating just any wedding anniversary – they were celebrating their 70th year as husband and wife.

The week The Friday Flyer had the last laugh
Is anyone out there playing an April Fools Day prank today? Well, six years ago, when the “holiday” last fell on a Friday, the newspaper staff here pulled off a great one! Editors Carolyn Knight and Sharon Rice sat at their computers and laughingly wrote a series of “News Briefs” that were so bizarre they thought no one would believe the tongue-in-cheek little blurbs. They were wrong! The “news” caused an uproar in the community. Read on – and don’t forget, they’re April Fools Day jokes!

Candidates weigh in on the POA General Manager contract
In preparation for the Property Owners Association Annual Meeting and Election on May 18, candidates for the POA Board of Directors are being given the opportunity to answer questions on a variety of issues.

City Connection: Proposed tax would help maintain public safety
The City of Canyon Lake receives a high level of police, paramedic and fire services. As a result, crime is low and medical response times are among the best in the county. Not surprisingly, Canyon Lake is one of the safest cities in the state.

City Connection: County Tax Assessor Ward sees little change ahead
Everything residents and the City Council ever wanted to know about property taxes and its allocation and projections for the City of Canyon Lake was covered by County Tax Assessor Larry Ward, Riverside County Treasurer-Tax Collector Don Kent, County Auditor/Controller Paul Angulo and Property Tax Division Chief Pam Elias at a special workshop of the Canyon Lake City Council on March 29.

City Connection: April 9 will be a day for cleaning and shredding
CR&R and the City of Canyon Lake will provide an opportunity to conveniently dispose of bulky items like e-waste, old furniture and appliances and more on Saturday, April 9, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot at Canyon Lake Community Church, 30515 Railroad Canyon Rd.

City Connection
Next week may be the week the City Council votes on the proposed Canyon Lake Towne Center multi-tenant pylon sign with LED screen. The project is set to come before the City Council at the Wednesday, April 6 meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Towne Center Boardroom. Plus other news and notes for residents of Canyon Lake.

Celebrate 'Day of Child' in April
The Library will celebrate “Day of the Child” during April. There will be four story times during the month. The Library is looking for people who can help with languages other than English at the Story Time and Crafts on April 15 and 29 from 11 a.m. to noon, or the Pajama Story Time on April 8 and 22 from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Story Time and Crafts will be held today, from 11 a.m. to noon. The Library is planning to have the fire truck from station 60 at the event.

Public Safety - 1st in a series: Colleary says proposal for city fire department quite realistic
On June 7, Canyon Lake residents will vote on whether to approve Measure E, a $204 Public Safety Tax that will help fund police and fire/paramedic protection in Canyon Lake for a period of five years. In the weeks ahead, The Friday Flyer will run a series of articles to provide the perspectives of qualified individuals who have studied this issue.

Chamber takes crowd 'over the rainbow'
The Chamber of Commerce's annual Installation Celebration and Community Recognition Banquet drew an appreciative crowd to the Holiday Bay Room at the Lodge on March 18 to honor awardees and their families and friends, along with outgoing and incoming Chamber officers and directors.

Chamber Notes: Chamber will host candidates at next luncheon
The Canyon Lake Chamber will hold its April luncheon on Wednesday, April 13, at 11:30 a.m. in the banquet room at Pepe’s. Candidates for the POA Board of Directors have been invited to participate in a Candidates Forum. The moderator will be Russ Smith, RAS Financial.

Lions accepting donations for earthquake relief in Japan
More than 107,000 Lions members have mobilized to provide immediate relief in Japan. As of March 16, the Lions had provided 10,000 cases of water, thousands of emergency food supply kits and served homemade stew to 100 elderly. They have established two relief command centers in the affected areas, as well as one in Tokyo.

Southern California meets South beach , Florida
Steve Henshaw, the author of this travel article for The Friday Flyer, says he is beginning to approach travel publications and Internet sites to sell his travel articles. “I hope to do a lot of work this summer in Europe and specifically in the Canary Islands, which most Americans are not too familiar with,” he says.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Sucker Punch'
Beware of dangerous curves ahead when five hot chicks cavort around in short skirts, wield sharp objects and carry automatic weapons. Sure, it’s a formula for every 17-year-old boy’s fantasy. But, even if you mix in a series of dream sequences there’s still a difference between surreal and ridiculous. The result is a cinematic “Sucker Punch.”

Teen Talk: Bridging communication gap with deaf community
Learning how to communicate in other languages is extremely important in every aspect of life. To graduate high school, students must complete two years of a foreign language. The most popular and well-received language to complete these high school credits has been Spanish.

Letter: Easter food drive
I would like to extend a special thanks to Randy and Sue Gibson of the Twirlers Square Dancing Club and to those who left food at our door for their generous gift of canned goods and other non-perishable food items they donated to our Easter food drive benefiting the Riverside City Mission.

Letter: Our vote
Jan O’Rourke has our vote for the POA Board of Directors. Our observations are her knowledge, attitude and involvement in the community. She has an understanding of the Canyon Lake issues.

Letter: Location of sign
In light of the scheduled widening and addition of narrower lanes of Railroad Canyon Rd. passing by the entrance to the busiest gated entry to our community on what is, and will continue to be, the busiest thoroughfare between Lake Elsinore and Sun City/Menifee, the addition of a sign of the type being proposed adds too much additional distraction to what is already a very busy intersection with more than its share of existing distractions.

Letter: Fire service
The citizens of Canyon Lake have recently been given an option from one of our citizens for a new delivery model of fire service within our community. The proposal on the table has been looked at by many from the fire service in our community, and from the business community.

Letter: Time to move on
For the past few weeks I have read and listened to how our former manger and controller were “stealing us blind.” I worked with both Clint and Ron on a lot of projects, and I never found any financial transactions on these projects that had not been sanctioned by Board members.

Letter: Ask the right questions
I guess it takes announcing pay raises in a recession and an election to wake people up to protect their rights and pocketbooks. Before you vote, ask the right questions.

Letter: General manager
Wake up Canyon Lake citizens. This community cannot afford to support the spending this Board has approved. There needs to be cuts in salary and a few positions of management eliminated.

Letter: LED message board
I am strongly opposed to the 52-square-foot electronic message board being proposed for the new Towne Center pylon sign. The proposed LED message board will create a serious safety hazard, and will significantly and permanently harm the feel of this community.

Letter: Three votes for neighbor
I have watched the last POA meeting and I was appalled that Michelle Gordon was allowed to advocate the defeat of not one but two candidates for the upcoming POA election. Our President Chuck Newsom should have stopped this triad.

Letter: Take aggressive stance
Travis Montgomery’s advertisement in last week’s The Friday Flyer was undoubtedly the most mean-spirited and prejudicial that I have ever seen in The Friday Flyer. References made to another century, memory loss, etc. were unquestionably referring to Dawn Haggerty’s age.

Letter: Candidate questionnaire
On March 13, I asked each of the candidates to answer the following questions with a yes or no, with the understanding that a failure to answer would be tallied a “no response.” The following is the result of the questionnaire:

Cooking traditional corned beef and cabbage, Sher was joined by son Riley Adamson and daughter Casey Brown, and their spouses and kids, all of Canyon Lake.

Announcement: New leadership for Threshold
Leadership changes are taking place at Canyon Lake Community Church, specifically within Threshold, one of the four Sunday worship services. After almost four years as teaching pastor, Kasey Crawford is leaving the leadership team, along with worship pastor Jesse Craig, to begin a new church ministry in the area.

The Cup Above is proud to announce that Coldwell Banker of Canyon Lake has joined the shop’s efforts to keep art in school and will be volunteering their time to assist students with the painting of their ceramic fish for the art program donated to Cottonwood Canyon Elementary and Tuscany Hills Elementary.

Announcement: Oops!
In spite of a photograph showing Scot Bruce with pen and album in hand, Carolyn Knight wanted to make sure The Friday Flyer readers are made aware Scot did not sign her Elvis Presley album, as indicated in last week’s article about the Scot Bruce “Shake, Rattle and Roll” concert.

Announcement: Jeanie Corral named Woman of the Year

This week’s pets are Snowball and Choco. Snowball is a 1-year-old female Husky mix that isn’t spayed. She loves to run outside but jumps high and needs a tall fence. Choco is an 8-month-old chocolate, domestic longhaired female that is full of affection.
