Water Symposium

In this photo of the Main Lake, provided by Dwayne Fuhrman of Canyon Lake Storage, a plume of silt resulting from heavy rains that occurred this winter can be seen at the center bottom of the photo. Silt and nutrients entering Canyon Lake from the San Jacinto River and Salt Creek create various problems for the Lake, and raise many questions from residents. Questions about water quality and more will be answered at a Water Symposium on April 20 at the Lodge. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

City Connection: Measure E would help City weather tough times
As many of residents know, Canyon Lake was incorporated to improve the quality of life in the community. Cityhood meant more responsive public safety services and ensured that the community would not be annexed by Lake Elsinore or a future city that would include Sun City and Menifee.

Sugar Dollz gets 'sweet spot' in Towne Center
It’s not hard to walk into the Sugar Dollz store and think of the well-known poem that begins with, “Sugar and spice and everything nice.” Owner Amy Espinosa is living out the poem at her new location in the former Gentlemen’s Club location, 31730 Railroad Canyon Rd., next to Canyon Lake Hair Design.

Girl Scout looking for help with dire situation
In response to a dire need at Meadowbrook Animal Sanctuary and Haven (MASH), and in conjunction with earning her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Morgan Brown is hoping to recruit the community’s help in rebuilding the sanctuary to its once beautiful condition – the first opportunity to help will come next weekend.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Source Code'
We’ve come a long way since the classic who-done-it “Murder on the Orient Express.” In “Source Code,” every passenger is still a suspect, but in this metaphysical sci-fi thriller, our star is locked onto instant replay with an unlimited number of “do-overs.” Fortunately, our hero catches his train, meets the girl and doesn’t miss his connections. All aboard!

Cook's Corner: This salsa recipe has just the 'write' stuff
Someone asked me recently if I write a blog. I don’t. But like many people, I read several blogs on a regular basis. My favorites include everything from political and news blogs and fashion and beauty blogs to writing/grammar blogs and education curriculum blogs. But the ones I inevitably circle back to again and again are food blogs. Shocked, aren’t you?

Letter: Total confidence
I would like to show my support for Bruce Yarbrough to represent me on the Board of Directors. I have total confidence that he will keep the interests of the property owners at heart in all decisions.

Letter: Forego further talk
I have read and heard many things about the recent audit and investigations related to possible malfeasance, poor management safeguards or even criminal conspiracy. I believe the current campaigning around this issue does not serve the community well.

Letter: Be willing to investigate
I just finished reading the police report regarding allegations of theft by mangers of the POA. Wow, no wonder four key managers resigned quickly. I also went to the POA’s website and read the audit report, and was upset at the limited scope of the audit.

Letter: Proposals for ballots
There are two items I would like to see on the next election ballots.

Letter: Level of service
I have been a resident of Canyon Lake for eight years. I moved here for the beauty as well as the safety of the community. The current situation regarding our police and fire services is of great concern to me.

Letter: Special night
Several years ago, my husband, Cliff, and I were celebrating our annual “Valentine’s Day – He Didn’t Make Dinner Reservations Again This Year” jaunt!  After driving for an eternity, we ended up at a local restaurant, where we were told there would be a two-hour wait, unless we wanted to share a big booth with another couple. My husband was famished and didn’t care about any romantic dinner I envisioned.

Letter: Get it done
In the 20 years I have lived in Canyon Lake, I have never asked my fellow property owners to consider a candidate for the Board.

Letter: Letter of apology
I spoke with Dawn Haggerty and apologized for my choice of words in my response to her insert in The Friday Flyer on March 18. My reference to her service on the POA Board in “the previous century,” “her memory is failing” and “lapse in memory” were ill-chosen phrases and I apologize.

Letter: Fire/paramedic services
The following letter is in response to Mr. Bradford’s inaccurate letter that the proposal for a City Fire Department would cost more money and provide a lesser level of service than we are currently receiving from Cal Fire.

Letter: Non-biased entity
None of the announced candidates are sufficiently qualified/experienced or will be able to meet the demanding rigors of managing the property owners’ interest in our little village by the Lake.

Letter: Solve real problems
We are deeply troubled by the vitriolic tenor of the so-called “Voice of the People.” We moved here 22 years ago because we liked the community, the gates, the Golf Course, the Lodge and all the other amenities.

Letter: Leadership roles
My wife and I have known Bruce Yarbrough for almost 10 years. We met him through the Golden West Water Ski Club in 2002. Since we have known Bruce, he has done many good deeds that have helped several different organizations.

Letter: JWC golf tourney
I would like to thank everyone involved in our 2nd annual Jr. Women’s Club Charity Golf Tournament. Our event was a great success thanks to all involved.

Letter: Relay for Life
I’d like to thank the citizens of Canyon Lake. Relay For Life of Menifee’s Team Zebra has been able to reach their fundraising goal for the 2011 Relay For Life thanks to the support of our fundraising efforts such as the Rubber Duck Race last fall and avid recycling of the season’s plastic bottles and cans from the area beaches and parks.

Letter: Above and beyond
Wow! A special thanks to the Operations Department for helping make the Bosom Buddies “Girls Night Out” event on March 31 a total success. Their attention to detail was so appreciated.

Letter: Take time to learn
I would like very much to thank Mr. Lawrence Neigel, who is one of POA candidates running for this year. I called him on the phone to see if he could answer a few questions my husband and I had.

Letter: Gathering information
I can’t believe that anyone would spend the time and money to devote three-quarters of a page in The Friday Flyer questioning the integrity of Sharon Rice. Sharon is one of the best “small town writers” I have ever seen!

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Rainforest paradise
Mary and Michael Petty, along with Maxine Whalen and Donna Nunes, recently joined a small tour group going to Andean Ecuador, Galapagos and the Costa Rican rainforest area. Michael says traveling to the equator and to nearly 10,000 feet in the Andes Mountains was very exciting.

Planning and Compliance: Time for spring cleaning of landscape
Spring is here. The days seem to be longer and warmer, and there has been just enough rain to make the hills come alive with new growth and splashes of color. That also means new, and sometimes unwanted, growth in our yards. Now is a great time to take a look around the yard and check for unwanted weed growth.
