'Country Fair' tomorrow

In keeping with a "Country Fair" theme, members of the Women's Golf Club beckoned attendees to stop by for "ice cold soda" at last year's Fiesta Day. Clubs once again will offer food and beverages in a food court on the turnaround in front of the Lodge. The parade begins Saturday, May 28, at 9 a.m.; festivities at the Lodge begin at 10:10 a.m. with the presentation of the American flag and singing of the National Anthem. All invited to 'Country Fair' tomorrow
With the theme, “Country Fair,” tomorrow’s Fiesta Day festivities have been planned around the small town pleasures of food, shopping and entertainment. The event will take place at the Lodge, where dozens of booths will offer food, crafts, clothes, jewelry and more. Entertainment will be provided throughout the day, and a special Kids’ Zone will be set up for the enjoyment of younger Canyon Lakers and their friends.

Fiesta Day: Here are details on driving and parking restrictions and more
Fiesta Day begins tomorrow, May 28, with a parade at 9 a.m. on Canyon Lake Dr. North. The parade starts at Gulf Stream Dr., turns onto Canyon Club Dr. and finishes at the Lodge, where the singing of the National Anthem at 10:10 a.m. will signal the start to festivities inside and outside the Lodge. Fiesta Day ends at 4 p.m.

City Connection: Police respond to young man brandishing knife
Last Sunday, May 22, many residents were startled by several Sheriff’s units entering the community a little before 11 a.m. with their sirens wailing. Lt. Daniel Hedge reports that about 10:50 a.m., officers responded to assist a Canyon Lake unit with a suicidal subject.

City Connection: 'One World' and upcoming Library activities
The slogan for this year’s Library Summer Reading Program is “One World, Many Stories,” which is a travel/multicultural theme. Signups for all ages, including adults, will begin June 6. Upcoming at the Library?

Residents have two opportunities to meet with City leaders. Coffee with the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem is held at the Sports Stop Pub & Grill in the Towne Center. The next Coffee with Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Horton is Tuesday, May 31, at 10 a.m. The next Coffee with Mayor Barry Talbot is Monday, June 6, at 10 a.m.

Resident critically injured while sky-diving
Nick Fener, a resident of Canyon Lake since 1986, was involved in a serious skydiving accident on May 20, sustaining massive trauma to his legs and spine doing what he loved the most – jumping out of a plane, according to friend, Mike Nootbaar of Nootbaar Plumbing.

Plan to play in 'Beautification Tournament'
All golfers are welcome to join the fun in support of a good cause to raise funds for the beautification of the Canyon Lake Golf Course in a “CLAPPS Beautification Tournament” scheduled for Saturday, June 25.

Samantha English is a valedictorian and in the Top 10 of her Temescal Canyon High School Class of 2011, which graduated yesterday at Storm Stadium.

Caitlin Dodd will graduate from Linfield Christian School in Temecula on June 9 and is one of many Canyon Lake students who commute to private schools in the region.

High school seniors receive awards, scholarships
Temescal Canyon High School and Elsinore High School announced the names of Canyon Lake seniors who were the recipients of awards and scholarships from Canyon Lake clubs and other local organizations. In many cases, the following students received college scholarships or private awards, which are not listed here.

What does your dad do to make you happy?
It’s been a few years since The Friday Flyer made room for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day tributes. This year, children have an opportunity to share “Three things my dad does to make me happy.” This can be in the form of a written tribute or a colorful drawing.

Audition for CLCT kids' production of 'Honk! Jr.'
Canyon Lake Community Theatre has announced its upcoming all-kid summer production will be the award-winning Broadway musical, “Honk! Jr.” Auditions will be held at the Lodge at noon on Sunday, June 5, in the Pool View Room.

CLMS 8th graders enjoy 'Mad Hatter's Ball'
Eighth grade students at Canyon Lake Middle School were treated to “The Mad Hatter’s Ball” on May 20, thanks to the efforts of the ASB, PTSA and a dedicated group of volunteers on the 8th Grade Dance Committee.

New cheer squad is announced at CLMS
Canyon Lake is bursting with “Cougar Pride” after tryouts for Canyon Lake Middle School Cheer were held in April. Of the squad of 38 girls chosen to represent CLMS for the 2011-2012 school year, 22 reside in Canyon Lake, according to Cheer Coach Tammy Howard and her assistant, Colleen Stevens.

JWC hosts 'Play Day' for special needs kids
Special things were happening at the Towne Center when the Canyon Lake Jr. Woman’s Club held its inaugural Spring Play Day for Special Needs Kids and their families on May 14. The POA, Chamber of Commerce and the City of Canyon Lake all joined the JWC to make the event special for special needs kids, who played games and won prizes.

Double Take dances away with medals
Double Take Dance Studio (DTDS) dancers were medal winners at the Sharp International Competition in Corona on May 21.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides'
Although this is the fourth film in the prolonged series, Disney describes “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” as the first of a new trilogy. Captain Jack Sparrow asked correctly in the original, “To what point and purpose?” Their act of piracy is the ability to virtually print money, so actually another sequel is not so much anticipated as inevitable.

Announcement: Record breaking swimmers
Three Canyon Lake swimmers broke Temescal Canyon High School records this season. Sophomore Devin Deckert broke the 50 and 100 freestyle records, as well as being part of the 200-medley relay record-breaking team. Devin was named Co-MVP, along with Mike Pounds, for the men’s team.  

Announcement: Gordon College graduate
On May 21, 2011, Joseph Valadez, son of Juan and Janet Valadez of Canyon Lake, received a bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts.

In Memoriam: Sue Kato
Sue S. Kato, longtime Canyon Lake resident, passed away May 3, 2011. She was 89 years old and lived a very full life.  She was born at home on the family farm in North Platte, Nebraska on September 7, 1921. 

Golf News: Ray Chenette Memorial Tournament
The Family Golf Club and the Chamber of Commerce will host the 14th annual Ray Chenette Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 18. This event is the major fundraiser for the Jr. Golf Clinic held in August.

Club News: Cotillian 'Mad Hatter'
Cotillion held its Mad Hatters Contest on May 6. Winners were pictured in incorrect order in the May 20 issue of The Friday Flyer. The 1st place contest winner was Riley Franzo, whose hat is pictured at top. Below her are 2nd place winner Shay Lee Gill and 3rd place winner Maddie Robertson. Other Mad Hatters participants model their creations below.

Travis Smith and guest Jim Emmett Sr. were the 1st place winners of the Bassmasters Member Guest Tournament.

Club News: Car Club
The Canyon Lake Car Club participated in Adopt-a-Highway recently and contributed to the beautification of the City by cleaning up Railroad Canyon Rd.

News Briefs: Tennis program for kids and adults
Tennis Pro Baba Soysa is offering new tennis programs for adults and children. The adult tennis lessons will be held on Friday mornings at 10 a.m., beginning June 3.

During a recent event at the Lodge, photographer Barbara Spraul paused long enough to "smell the roses" and even take a picture of them. The blooms of spring have faded, but the Lodge will be bursting with color of another sort this weekend for Fiesta Day.

At the Lodge and Country Club: Bar & Grill to be open all weekend
It's a big weekend at the Lodge as the Lighthouse Bar & Grill is scheduled to be open all four days of the holiday. It will open at 5 p.m. this evening, May 27, for dinner.

Volunteers on POA committees honored at annual banquet - Part 1
The POA hosted a recognition dinner on May 17 at the Lodge for all the volunteers who served on POA committees in 2010-11. Each volunteer received a certificate and logo cup in appreciation of his/her service.

Pool News: Pool is now open for summer hours
Memorial Day weekend marks the first weekend of summer and changes in the Pool schedule and water aerobics schedule, as well as the opportunity to register for swim lessons.

Here are guidelines for registering boats for Canyon Lake
To register a boat, the following items are needed:

Marine Patrol/Community Patrol says...
The Marine Patrol would like to remind members of Rules and Regulations Section VII-A.7: Non-operational permits will be issued upon entering a gate. Boats within Canyon Lake under a non-operational permit will not be allowed on or above the water.
