Happy 4th of July

As Canyon Lakers gather this weekend with friends and family to celebrate the 4th of July, may we remember the significance of this holiday commemorating America's independence, and the troops who continue to fight for our country. One of those soldiers, Sgt. Nigel Kelly, 26, Temescal Canyon High School Class of 2003 and a former resident, lost his life fighting in Afghanistan last weekend. Canyon Lakers are encouraged to honor Nigel's memory by being thoughtful of their neighbors over the holiday weekend – on the streets, at parks and on the Lake – and being respectful of the public safety officials (police, fire and special enforcement) who will be on duty to protect citizens. For details of what to expect over the weekend in the way of road closures, calling in guests, claiming picnic spots and more, see Page A-3. The fireworks will begin Monday at 9 p.m. Residents and their guests are reminded cars and golf carts will not be allowed to park on the causeways at any time.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Cars 2'
On the second lap of “Cars,” Pixar hopes Lightning can strike twice. However, this time, it stars Mater, voiced by Larry the Cable guy, who is simply truck smart and semi-stupid. The race is on in this visual sensation. Even if in this G rated kid-friendly feature, big oil, evil scientists and gangsters give the word “mechanic” a whole new meaning.

Letter: Pole painting
While driving along Canyon Lake Drive I was amazed to see the street signposts sporting a fresh coat of white paint. In these days of financial difficulties, the expense of such a thing is foolish beyond belief. Who authorized such a thing? Is this a “make work” program?

Letter: Praise and criticism
Thanks, Sean, for the great letter in the June 24 The Friday Flyer. Much better than the first one. However, in the article quoting Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Horton she sounded like she was going to spank all the voters’ hands for not getting her way. Resign now. Do us all a favor. Or work with what you have.
