Labor Day

In many places, Labor Day weekend traditionally marks the end of the summer season, if not the actual last day of summer as indicated on the calendar – that occurs on September 22. Now, with school starting early in August, there isn't the usual angst that comes with back-to-school shopping for clothes and school supplies over Labor Day weekend. In this area at least, that's an emotion belonging to the parents' generation – not to today's kids. But Labor Day is the last big holiday of the summer season, which many Canyon Lakers happily enjoy right here in their own community. This poignant scene of young boys enjoying the sunset at Taco Tuesday is a reminder that the "summer feeling" never really ends in "a little bit of paradise." Happy Labor Day. |

Looking Back: Looking back at events of past Septembers
40 years ago in September 1971, the major news in the local monthly publication, The Canyon Lake Lighthouse, was the fact that Jay Keegan Jr. was appointed to the new position of “POA Administrator.” Keegan had been elected the previous May to the POA Board, but on July 1 resigned, citing in a letter that he had sold his home on Canyon Lake Dr. North and was moving to Florida. Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Our Idiot Brother'
By definition, an art house flick has limited appeal. As the darling of the Sundance Film Festival, “Our Idiot Brother” attempts to enlighten its audience on what is important in life. There’s an intelligent plot in there somewhere, but substituting simplistic sex scenes for complex issues and F-bombs for dialog is insulting and artistically lazy.
Day Tripping with Mary: Enjoy an 'instant weekend vacation' at Pala

Cook's Corner: Get a whiff of Ribboned Zucchini Salad
“What is that smell?” asked my husband as he walked into the kitchen. I smiled as I lifted the lid of a ceramic bowl. Inside laid the stubby ends of carrots, some stringy celery, wilted lettuce, coffee grounds – and a black banana peel. “I’m just starting a compost pile,” I answered proudly.
