It's a big weekend in Canyon Lake

The Car Club is hosting a Car Show at the Lodge this weekend, featuring more than 200 classic and custom cars and trucks. The free show will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Indian Beach will be the site of Oktoberfest this Sunday, October 2, from 3 to 6 p.m. Brats and sauerkraut, beer and wine will be available, along with music provided by the American Bavarian Brass Band. This is also the final weekend to attend the 'Wizard of Oz' sponsored by Canyon Lake Community Theatre with performances tonight, September 30 and Saturday, October 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Great weekend in store for Canyon Lakers
October is typically a fun month to live in and visit Canyon Lake. The weather is usually close to perfect, and a number of clubs organize community-wide events to appeal to all ages.

This is final weekend to see 'Wizard of Oz'
For residents who have not yet seen Canyon Lake Community Theatre’s production of “The Wizard of Oz,” only two opportunities remain: Tonight, September 30, and tomorrow, October 1, at 7:30 p.m. Last weekend’s performances received standing ovations.

'Wizard of Oz' enthralls opening week audiences
Those who attended one or more of last weekend’s shows can attest to the almost-magical quality of being under the trees at Indian Beach, the darkness of the park, like a curtain around the intimacy of the Moonlight Theater. On stage, characters of all ages lit up the night with the whimsical journey to find home, heart, brains and courage.

Sheriff's Dive Team pulls vehicles from Lake
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Underwater Search and Recovery Team (Dive Team) conducted “Heavy Lifting Operations” training in Canyon Lake on Friday, September 16. The training site was limited to the North Ski Area.  

SCE crews 'undergrounding' utilities on Railroad Canyon Rd.
Don’t look for the construction equipment on Railroad Canyon Rd. to go away any time soon. For the past few weeks, crews working for Southern California Edison have been trenching and installing structures and duct work on the south side of the roadway in preparation for putting the utility lines that run in front of the Towne Center underground.

Lowe's gives $100,000 grant to Temescal Canyon High School
Temescal Canyon High School received a $100,000 grant from Lowe’s home improvement center and the ceremonial check was presented to the school at halftime during the September 23 football game.

Marine Band entertains a patriotic crowd
Last Sunday’s Marine Band concert drew an appreciative crowd that watched from chairs on the slope overlooking the theater at Indian Beach and spilled over into several rows of folding chairs and golf carts. The backdrop for the band was a large set from “The Wizard of Oz,” along with the magnificent flag from Carl Karcher Enterprises. Audience members waved small flags provided by the Home Owners Club.

Lions 'Country Breakfast'
The Canyon Lake Lions Club will hold its new Country Breakfast on Sunday, October 16, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Holiday Harbor. The menu has been changed to include scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, country fried potatoes, juice, coffee and tea for a $7.50 donation per person. Kids 11 and under are $5. Bloody Marys and Mimosas will be for sale also.

Brett Downey Tourney
The Brett Downey Safety Foundation will host its 7th annual Charity Golf Tournament on October 15 at Menifee Lakes Country Club. The cost for individual players is $125 per person, which includes green fees, cart, goody bag and dinner. Sponsor opportunities are also available. Chamber Notes
The Chamber will sponsor an Oktoberfest, with food and fun for all ages, on Saturday, October 8, from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Towne Center. This event is hosted by Tom Gibson, owners of Pepe’s Restaurant, and Ria and Pete Riley, owners of the Sports Stop.

Arts and Entertainment
The Junior Women’s Club invites residents to the annual Chili Cook-off, where cooks will don their aprons and compete for prizes on Saturday, October 15, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Holiday Harbor. Plus other Arts, Entertainment and activities in and around Canyon Lake.

I had a lot of thoughts about what I wanted to write about for my next column this last week – fun things, informative things, casual thoughts. But then some things happened to me this week that left me dumbfounded about situations I was never aware of or even thought existed. It immediately grabbed my attention and I began to dig deeper into the subject and knew I had to write about it.

On September 17, the Lioness and Lions Clubs of Canyon Lake held their 8th annual Western Barbecue at Eastport Park. On behalf of the committee, we want to thank all who attended and made the event a great success. Everyone enjoyed the food provided by Thomas Catering. The weather cooperated and it was a gorgeous evening.

Like most homeowners, I was impressed when the Board reduced our dues by $180 annually. However, after reviewing the financial reports for the first three months, we have a $145,000 budget overrun with 10 of the 12 reporting departments over budget.

As a parent and a newcomer to Canyon Lake Community Theatre, I just want to tell the cast and crew how proud I am of all of them. To see the hard work and dedication that each and everyone of them has put into this show is amazing. 

Letter: A wonderful weekend
What a wonderful weekend I had. On Saturday night, I went to see the “Wizard Of Oz” at the Moonlight Theater stage at Indian Beach. What a spectacular performance – the singing, dancing, artistic scenery, costumes and the wonderful acting! It was just a joy to see all of that talent here in Canyon Lake.   

Letter: Economic review
The Board of Realtors for our area sponsored an “Economic Review by City” on Monday morning, September 26, to a full crowd. The six cities in this area are Canyon Lake, Lake Elsinore, Menifee, Murrieta, Temecula and Wildomar. The city manager or representative for all cities except Canyon Lake presented their ideas to meet the challenges in this very difficult economy.

Announcement: New Brownie troop
Canyon Lake Brownie Troop 1741 held its first meeting on September 14 and learned the Girl Scout Promise and the Girl Scout Law.

Announcement: Photo takes 1st place honors
Daniel Basubas, a 2009 graduate of Temescal Canyon High School now attending the University of Arizona Tucson, recently took 1st place in the inaugural Honors College Study Abroad Photography Competition with a photo titled “Dancing Himba.” Daniel snapped the photo during a trip to Namibia in July 2011. It was selected for 1st place honors in the “People” category.

In Memoriam: Mavis Ness
Mavis Irene Ness’ extraordinary life came to an end September 21, 2011, 19 days shy of turning 91. She was born October 10, 1920 in a room that still exists, in a house her youngest brother wired for electricity.

Canyon Lakers will have a new appreciation for the term “munchkin” after viewing Canyon Lake Community Theatre’s production of “The Wizard of Oz.” These young members of the Lollipop Guild, photographed by Bert Barbay, were just a few of the many costumed characters to greet Dorothy on her journey down the yellow brick road.

Adopt-A-Pet: Sam and Hank
In celebration of the one-year anniversary of the opening of the Southwest Communities Animal Center and AFV’s participation in the ASPCA’s $100,000 Challenge, a “Hoedown for Homeless Animals” will be held on Sunday, October 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Board of Directors is considering three policy changes, as indicated in the Agenda. These proposed policies are listed below.

Members are reminded a POA Board Suggestion Form is available at Member Services and at www.canyonlakepoa.com. This form provides an opportunity for members to make a suggestion to the entire Board after taking the following steps:

POA Committees: Committee chairs provide annual reports
The Annual Committee Reports were not printed in the CLPOA Audit Report, Financial Statement and Supplementary Information Report that was included in the August 26 The Friday Flyer. This year, the CLPOA is printing the Annual Committee Reports, as provided by the chair of each committee, in the Business News section of The Friday Flyer. This is the third in the series of Committee Reports.

Here is Car Show Lodge parking and cruise information
There will be no parking in the Lodge parking lot after midnight tonight, September 30, except for Car Show participants, vendors and handicap parking. Canyon Club Dr. beyond Lighthouse Dr. will not be open to through traffic during the event.

At the Lodge: Bar & Grill open all day during Car Show
The Lighthouse Bar & Grill will open at 7 a.m. and will serve menu specials all day tomorrow, October 1, during the Classic Car Show. Specials will include Waffles (with strawberries and whipped cream for $7.25) or (with hot maple syrup and butter for $5.95). During lunch that day, the special will be Hot Pastrami Sandwich with Fries for $7.95.

Saturday Night Dinner Specials at the Lighthouse
All Saturday night dinner specials are are served with green salad and rolls.

At the Country Club: Country Club closed during over-seeding
As a reminder, the Country Club will be closed for food service from September 26 through October 13. The Country Club will re-open Friday, October 14, at 6:30 a.m. for breakfast service.

Planning & Compliance: Keep property debris-free during construction
Improving your home and property is an exciting endeavor, but it doesn’t come without its fair share of pitfalls. The Planning and Compliance Department would like to help members cut down on that stress as much as possible.

Classes & Activities: Jump into fall with dance and exercise
Belly Dance – Belly Dance classes have been changed to Mondays. They will be held at 7:15 p.m. at the Lodge on these dates: October 3, 10, 17, 24, November 7 and 14. Plus other classes. . .

Classes & Activities: Painting class
Rita Forand’s next painting class will be held Sunday, October 16, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Pool View Room at the Lodge. Students will learn how to paint this serene autumn scene.

Member Memos
The Golf Course currently is closed through October 13 for over-seeding. There are several important steps involved in the over-seeding process.
