9/11 - We will never forget!

As Canyon Lakers watched news reports of terrorist attacks in New York and Washington D.C. on September 11, 2001, many felt stunned and helpless to express their sorrow. Rather than remain in front of his TV, resident Jon Chaffin picked up his American flag and began waving it to passers-by on Canyon Lake Dr. North. The sight cheered many who saw him and inspired Tammy Kennedy to get on her computer and send out an e-mail to friends. She encouraged her Canyon Lake neighbors with the same message: "Please let everyone across America know that we are all flying our American flags in support of our country and in honor and respect to those who have lost their lives and their loved ones in this tragedy." In the same way, Canyon Lakers once again are urged to fly their flags this Patriot Day weekend. |

This Week's Official CLPOA News
9/11 – We will never forget!
Ten years ago today, no one could imagine the horror that would be visited upon America in just two days. It was business in usual in Canyon Lake. School had started the week before. The POA Board of Directors was dealing with a couple of issues coming up in a special election. Clubs were putting on community events.
9/11 – Canyon Lakers share memories – Part 1
Jason Burris – Who can forget? I was living in a tiny, one-room apartment in Cardiff by the Sea with my future wife, Erica. I was going about my morning routine of running and then ironing my cammies, drinking coffee and watching the news before heading out for Camp Pendleton.
9/11 – Canyon Lakers share memories – Part 2
Carolyn Knight - The second week of September 10 years ago was an especially stressful one for our family. My husband Vick had been experiencing chest pains since his mother’s death in late July, and shortness of breath and exhaustion made this usually vibrant man unrecognizable.
9/11: Ruben Flores recorded NYFD scanner feed
One the morning of 9/11, I was in the final stages of editing my book, “Inside the World of Police Scanners.” While working, I would always have my TV on CNN, with the volume low, and I would periodically look up at the TV to see what was being discussed. That morning, I recall typing and then hearing “This just in, we have unconfirmed reports this morning that a plane has crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center.”
9/11: Ron Martel helped Pentagon after attack
In 2001, my workdays would start early enough to support the three-hour time difference in the East. While on the phone with an IBM coworker who was monitoring CNN, he noted an airplane had struck the World Trade Center. Thinking Piper Cub, I clicked on the news and realized this was catastrophic. Although I represent IBM’s Disaster Recovery business, 9/11 transcended my normal course of fires, flood and earthquakes that can adversely affect a business’ critical information systems and data.
9/11: Steve Salazar experienced best, worst of days
Fabiola and I will always remember the events surrounding 9/11 as some of the best and worst days of our lives.
9/11: Gary Bradford knew reality as a firefighter
I can remember an early morning phone call on September 11, 2001 from my sister-in-law telling us to turn on the television because there was a plane crash in New York. I immediately turned on the television and watched in horror the sights that unfolded. They showed a replay of the first plane flying into one of the World Trade Center towers and then, as we watched, the second plane flew into the second tower.
9/11: Norma Horrocks viewed disaster from Africa
I am quoting from the entry in my book entitled “I Haven’t Been Everywhere – But It’s On My List!”
9/11: Pat Elliano, stranded in Washington DC
On September 11, 2001, I was traveling in the Virginia/Washington DC area with eight coworkers to complete work projects. As we crossed the Potomac River near Washington DC, my brother called asking if I was okay. I laughed and asked why?
9/11: Art Zasio celebrated a birthday in Washington
September 11, 2001 was my 67th birthday. Dee and I were visiting my niece and her husband in Sequim, Washington. The days preceding 9/11, we were given a personal tour by our hosts that took us to from quaint little towns to beautiful lakes nestled in the mountains.
9/11 – Historic article recalls community efforts
The following article is reprinted from the September 28, 2001 issue of The Friday Flyer.
9/11 – Old Glory flew from most homes and even cars
Planters in the Towne Center bloomed with red, white and blue flags, thanks to the City of Canyon Lake, the Merchant Owners Association and the patriotic efforts of Debby Gagnon, who placed the flags.
9/11 – Inaugural Golf Cart Show held 9/14/11
Mike Shroyer of Good Time Entertainment was in a quandary after the attacks of September 9, 2001. Should he cancel the Golf Cart Rally he had planned for the following Sunday, September 14, or should he carry on and use it as a means to honor the victims, survivors and workers involved in 9/11.
